Are At Home Microcurrent Devices Worth The Investment?

Meet the skincare trend buzzing beneath the surface of the beauty industry

We all have our skincare go-tos – a weekly collagen sheet, a cult retinol treatment, a super hydrating SPF – but when it comes to beauty gadgets, we tend to be a bit more selective. There’s the massagers, the gua shas, the rollers, the depuffing wands and the LED masks, but one skincare tool we’re seeing more and more of lately is the humble microcurrent device. Promising to lift and sculpt (as long as you have the right technique, of course), microcurrent therapy is the hot new thing not just in the salon, but at home too.

We get the inside scoop on the beauty phenomenon from Melanie Simon, electrical aesthetician and founder of ZIIP.

Ask The Expert: How Do Microcurrent Devices Work?

What Is Microcurrent Therapy?

First things first: get to know the therapy behind the device. ‘Think of microcurrent as a personal trainer for your face,’ encourages Melanie, ‘but instead of lifting weights, your skin and muscles are gently stimulated by tiny electrical currents.

‘These currents mimic the body’s own natural electricity to energise cells, boosting collagen and elastin, improving circulation, and supporting lymphatic drainage,’ she continues. ‘The result? Skin that looks more lifted, radiant, and alive. It’s completely non-invasive and can give an instant post-facial glow and sculpt.’

Melanie also notes that, with the added guidance of apps (as is seen with ZIIP), you can also target specific areas of concern, like fine lines, sagging, uneven tone, pigmentation, inflammation, and congestion. And all from your bedroom, no less.

How Do Microcurrent Devices Work?

The hard bit is getting these microcurrents to interact with areas of the face you want to target – which is where your beauty gadget comes in. ‘Microcurrent devices send tiny, carefully controlled electrical currents through the skin using conductive probes and gel, ensuring the energy flows comfortably and efficiently,’ explains Melanie.

What Are The Benefits?

As we mentioned, the main benefit associated with microcurrent therapy is facial sculpting – but Melanie tells us there are plenty of other pros to add to the list. ‘Microcurrent subtly sculpts and tones facial contours, improves circulation, and gives skin that unmistakable post-facial radiance,’ she emphasises. ‘By boosting cellular energy (ATP), it also supports collagen and elastin production, improving firmness and texture over time.’

There’s also the added luxury of being able to achieve results like these without a trip to the salon or clinic. ‘It’s non-invasive, easy to use and perfect for anyone looking to maintain or enhance skin health at home,’ says Melanie. ‘Think of it as a cumulative treatment: the more consistently you use it, the more your skin performs at its best.’

How Long Until Results Are Visible?

Melanie notes that there are both instant and long term results that come with using a microcurrent device. ‘You’ll be able to see and feel an instant difference – more lift, less puffiness, a brighter, more awake look, even after one session,’ she says. ‘But the magic really happens with consistency. Over four to six weeks, you’ll notice more defined contours, improved tone and that “energised” look that makes skin appear healthier and more alive.’

She adds that devices like the ZIIP HALO can be used to execute tailored programmes (made on the accompanying app), so that you can start to see more impressive results within six just weeks.

Are Microcurrent Devices Painful To Use?

‘Not at all,’ emphasises Melanie. ‘Microcurrent should never be painful – at most, you’ll feel a soft tingling or gentle muscle twitch that reminds you it’s working.’ So while the phrase does say ‘beauty is pain’, there’s no need for that here. ‘There’s no need for a high pain tolerance, it’s a treatment that should feel good while doing good.’

But just in case: ‘If you ever experience a small “zap” it usually means you need a bit more conductive gel or firmer contact with the skin.’

Are They Safe?

When used correctly, microcurrent devices are incredibly safe. Melanie notes that devices like the ZIIP HALO are rigorously tested and designed for home use – but it’s important that any given instructions are followed properly and that conductive gel is always used alongside the device. ‘Used properly, it’s a gentle, effective technology, and as with anything electrical, good technique equals great and safe results.’

She does however add that microcurrent isn’t suitable for everyone: ‘Anyone with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, epilepsy, or who is pregnant should avoid treatment unless cleared by a doctor. It’s also best not to use it over broken, inflamed, or recently treated skin.’

How Often Should You Use Them?

As long as you’re consistent, says Melanie, you should start to notice results. ‘Consistency really is the secret to great results, but even once or twice a week is better than nothing,’ she emphasises. ‘The sweet spot is three to five sessions weekly, especially in the beginning, to help the skin and muscles “learn” the stimulation. From there, you can move into a maintenance rhythm that fits your lifestyle.’

More likely to thrive with structure? The apps that often accompany microcurrent devices also offer plans that can guide you through concern-specific treatments. Some, like ZIIP, also offer different waveform combinations to address everything from lifting and calming problem skin to boosting radiance and tackling pigmentation.

In Salon vs At Home

So how does the experience compare to what we might receive in the salon? ‘Professional microcurrent facials use more powerful machines and are performed by trained aestheticians who can deliver deeper, targeted stimulation for immediate lifting and sculpting results,’ explains Melanie. ‘At-home devices, like our ZIIP HALO, are designed to be gentler, user-friendly and incredibly safe – making microcurrent accessible to everyone, regardless of experience.’

It largely comes down to convenience and working with safer microcurrent levels. ‘They’re easy to use, risk-free and allow you to keep your skin toned and radiant whether used on their own, or in between professional treatments,’ adds Melanie. She also points out that beauty tech company CurrentBody utilises microcurrent and nanocurrent therapy in its clinics, usually alongside the likes of a hydrafacial to really enhance the penetration of products and treatments. In this case, using a microcurrent device after treatment can help prolong the effects of an in-clinic treatment.

How To Use A Microcurrent Device

It’s not all about the device – you need to put in some of the work to get those results. ‘Technique really matters,’ confirms Melanie. ‘When using microcurrent, remember to move the device gently up and out, following the natural contours of the face, which not only sculpts but also encourages lymphatic drainage and helps reduce puffiness.’ So the gentler, the better.

‘Microcurrent is all about gradual, cumulative progress, so manage expectations: it won’t erase deep wrinkles overnight, but with consistent use, it transforms the way your skin behaves,’ she adds. ‘It also pairs beautifully with other treatments, especially LED, and should always be combined with daily SPF. Think of it as your skin’s workout routine – like any exercise, consistency is what really delivers.’

Is The Investment Worth It?

In short, yes – but only if you’re willing to keep at it. It’s important to remember that these are intelligent tools, and while you may not experience an overnight transformation or achieve the same results as you would in a clinic, they’re designed to help treat concerns over time through consistent use.

‘At-home devices are absolutely worth the investment, but you need to be committed to using them consistently,’ highlights Melanie. ‘Think of it as the closest thing you can get to a professional facial in your own home, whenever you need it. They can help smooth fine lines, tighten sagging skin, boost radiance, calm spots and even improve pigmentation, making it not just an excellent investment in instant lift or contour, but in long-term skin health, versatility and confidence.’
