I Tried A Reiki Facial And The Results Shocked Me

Better skin, from the inside out
‘Her experience was profound, and it was for me, too.’ Justine Masters, the self-described ‘alternative facialist’, is telling me about a recent treatment with one of her clients, which she says not only addressed their troubled skin, but helped them get to the root of some of their deepest struggles. Unlike most facialists, who treat skin from the outside-in, Justine believes in an inside-out approach to treating stressed complexions. I had no idea what to expect when I arrived at her Mayfair clinic for an hour-long Reiki facial, but it wasn’t this.
Tried & Tested: The Rebalance Reiki Crystal Facial by Justine Masters
Like most mothers, I am stressed. I wear it on my face – not in my expression, but in frequent breakouts, that I did not expect to still be weathering as I approach my 40s. When I enter Justine’s office, late and frantic after a District Line delay, she points at my chin, which is dotted with a few spots. ‘That’s your colon,’ she says. I sit down and gulp down the glass of water she’s set out for me, hoping to cheer my colon up.
A former fashion stylist, Justine Masters retrained after experiencing peri-menopausal symptoms and finding there was no specialist who could address the combined impact on her skin, hormones, and overall wellbeing. She became the expert she had been seeking and is now a holistic facialist and skin therapist focusing on pro‑ageing treatment and treating menopausal and hormonal skin concerns from the inside out.
Having tried Reiki before, I wasn’t sure whether our hour together would involve Justine actually touching my face at all, but her Rebalance Reiki Crystal Facial combines Reiki energy healing, crystal therapy, and neuro-calming, as well as more hands-on facial treatments including barrier-repair skincare to help lower cortisol, soothe inflammation, and restore overall balance. She utilises skincare technology alongside her alternative treatments, so my facial features the Hyper Plasma Fusion Go by Plasma pen for inflammation and breakouts followed by deep hydration for inside-out and outside-in benefits.

Hyper Plasma Fusion Go Pen
The hands-on facial lasts about half of the session, at which point Justine applies a hydrating sheet mask and we enter the crystal healing and Reiki part of the facial. I would describe myself as an open-minded cynic; I seek magic in the world but I too frequently find the magician’s workings instead. So when, at the beginning of our session, she described deep transformations and profound experiences, I was somewhat skeptical. Justine selects a handful of crystals that she feels I will benefit from. I hold a citrine ‘for success and abundance’, and on my face she places jade, ‘which is beautifully balancing especially for breakout-prone or acne-prone skin’ and amethyst, ‘a deeply calming and protective stone’. Then she places her hands over my ears like cups and we do a breathing and visualisation exercise. She asks me to select an intention that I can repeat and focus on throughout the Reiki practice.
This is where things get woo-woo. The words I repeat to myself begin taking on visual form as Justine works. I see lights shifting above my head, taking on shapes and scenes and twisting in such a way that my mantra takes on new meaning and I realise I am working on the wrong thing. I feel pressure at various points on my body as she works, all the while repeating and rephrasing the words, watching a whirling landscape of lights behind my closed eyes. When she finishes working and gently encourages me to bring myself back to the present I feel that something serious has shifted; much like, as Justine promises, the blemishes will too in just a few days.
The Results
I leave Justine’s office with a slightly shifted perspective on life, along with a follow-up from her on practical changes I can make to support my overall wellbeing and skin health. She suggests dandelion root tea for the liver, nettle tea for collagen production and pineapple after meals to aid digestion.
I entered Justine’s clinic slightly skeptical at the healing potential of a one-hour woo-woo facial, and left with a brighter complexion and a revelation about my deep-rooted darkest troubles. And as for my turnaround in judgement? Profound.
