Does this home have the most exquisite gardens in London?

As Scotsmen swarm the streets of Boston and Miami, and the US ‘soccer’ team start to outshine us Brits on the pitch, it seems that this World Cup has finally taught Americans to appreciate the beautiful game. But what brought on this newfound love? While it can’t take all the credit, we’re sure Ted Lasso had a part to play. Featuring Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham, the Apple TV series follows its titular character – a dorky American football coach plonked in the midst of UK culture – as he attempts to manage fictional football team, AFC Richmond. And with the fourth series of the show returning to our screens on 5 August, it seems that America’s football mania will last well beyond the World Cup final.

Set and filmed in Richmond, London, not only has Ted Lasso got Americans falling for (English) football, but for the star-studded borough too. And in case the show has inspired you to make the move, we’ve got the perfect place for you – a beautiful Richmond townhouse that starred in the show, now on the market for £15m.

Take A Look Inside Gloucester House

Following the Ted Lasso townhouse on The Green that came to the market two years ago, this new Ted Lasso home can be found on Richmond Hill. Fans of the show may recognise Gloucester House from season 3, where it served as the home of Michael (Sam Liu), the boyfriend of AFC Richmond player Colin Hughes (Billy Harrris). But that’s not the only series where this impressive property has made an appearance, having also starred in the Amazon series Malice (the psychological thriller starring a bizarrely evil Jack Whitehall) and the Sky series Gangs of London (an action crime drama based on The Getaway video game franchise).

Now for sale for just the second time since 1905, this Grade II listed property was first constructed between 1845 and 1850 on land formerly belonging to Ellerker House – now known as The Old Vicarage School. An example of early Victorian architecture and craftsmanship, its classical façade is rich in Italianate detailing, including ornate hood moulds, dentilled eaves, curved bays and a Tuscan-style entrance porch that frames the double doors.

Arranged over five floors, the property spans 8,781 sqft of internal living space across its six bedrooms, five bathrooms, four reception rooms and separate staff accommodation. Acquired by the current owners in 2002, the pair carried out a meticulous four-year renovation of the home. Period features such as sash windows, wooden floors, joinery, ornate cornicing, fireplaces and staircases were restored and replaced, while many modern enhancements were also incorporated. Air-con, mechanical ventilation, new electrics and plumbing were added, underfloor heating and working gas fireplaces installed, telecom systems incorporated, security tightened, and a water softener, rainwater harvesting system and electronic charging point included to enhance the home’s sustainability ratings.

Bigger renovations were also carried out by the couple. The garden level was lowered, the rear terrace extended, a self-contained staff flat and plant rooms added, and a 12.5 swimming pool installed.

A rarity for London, the heated outdoor pool is set within half an acre of gardens (just about big-enough for a five-a-side game) described by agent Daniel Hutchins – the head of sales at Savills Richmond – as ‘the most exquisite private gardens I have encountered in my 40 years as an agent’. He adds: ‘The house truly offers the best of both worlds – its own spectacular private gardens along with the green spaces of Richmond Park – “a park within a park” so to speak – and the protected views of Richmond Hill both just a short distance away.’ Alongside the pool (plus changing facilities), the gardens feature vegetable patch, water features, a pond, formal lawns, a covered verandah, a greenhouse and garage.
