One Hundred Years Of Solitude Returns For Its Final Chapter This August

As streaming adaptations of ‘unfilmable’ classics multiply, the first part of Netflix’s One Hundred Years of Solitude stood out as a faithful, visually sumptuous rendering of Gabriel García Márquez’s masterwork. When Part 1 landed in December 2024, it quickly earned critical acclaim and captivated audiences worldwide thanks to its visual poetry, faithful approach to the source material, and the ensemble cast’s exceptional performances.

The second and final part of this ambitious Colombian production is set to land in August 2026, bringing the conclusion to one of literature’s greatest sagas – the multi-generational curse of the Buendía family and the mythical town of Macondo they founded. Here’s what to expect.

What Will Happen In Part 2?

The opening chapters of Márquez’s novel introduced José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán, whose forbidden union between cousins set the stage for generations of eccentricity, magical occurrence and creeping doom. They founded Macondo, an isolated utopia where the impossible becomes routine – where the dead linger, levitation occurs without fanfare, and a travelling band of gypsies arrives each year peddling wonders like alchemy and ice as though they were groceries.

Part 2 shifts towards the larger forces that will ultimately destroy Macondo. After years of bloody civil war and the signing of the Treaty of Neerlandia, peace remains elusive. The Conservatives, fearful of Colonel Aureliano Buendía’s military prowess, plot an attack that inadvertently brings Fernanda del Carpio from Bogotá to town. Her marriage to Aureliano Segundo – one of the untamable twin sons of the patriarch Arcadio – marks a turning point. She bears Úrsula her first legitimate heirs, introducing new bloodlines and complications into the family’s tragic cycle.

Meanwhile, Aureliano Segundo’s twin, José Arcadio Segundo, becomes absorbed in their grandfather’s ancient manuscripts and scientific ambitions. His efforts to connect Macondo to the wider world lead to the arrival of the railway – with it, the banana company. This industrial incursion becomes the town’s undoing: as wealth floods in, so does corruption, exploitation and moral decay. The very modernisation meant to save Macondo becomes its doom, fulfilling Úrsula’s ancient curse: that the Buendía line, condemned to 100 years of solitude, would never be granted a second chance on earth.

This will all be chronicled across eight episodes filmed entirely in Colombia with the support of García Márquez’s family. Watch the trailer below for a taste of the action.

One of the most successful projects shot in the South American nation, One Hundred Years of Solitude is particularly beloved for spotlighting Colombia’s rich culture and legacy of magical realism. As Netflix’s vice president of Latin America content, Francisco Ramos, puts it: ‘With this series, we pay tribute to the legacy of Gabriel García Márquez and to Colombia and its extraordinary talent.’

Laura Mora returns as director alongside new collaborator Carlos Moreno, a Colombian filmmaker known for his work on films like Dogwashers, and the series The Final Score and Wild District.

Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, Cataño described the character as representing ‘an honour and a risk’, adding that Macondo and its inhabitants felt ‘so beautifully tragic that it is impossible not to be trapped in this world’.

Where Was It Filmed?

Netflix has remained loyal to García Márquez’s Colombian heritage and setting with One Hundred Years of Solitude: the series was filmed entirely in Colombia. This was also at the request of the author’s family, who asked that the adaptation be shot in Colombia, in Spanish, and with Colombian actors. García Márquez’s sons Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha serve as executive producers on the series.

Production mainly took place across La Guajira, Magdalena, Cesar, Cundinamarca and Tolima. The fictional town of Macondo was constructed near Alvarado by over 1,100 workers. Rather than film in a single location, the production team built four distinct versions of the town to visually chronicle its transformation across the generations – from its utopian founding to its eventual decay. Furniture was sourced from local antique stores, while fabrics and artifacts were created by local artisans.

The production has proved transformative for Colombia, with Netflix reporting the series generated 225 billion COP (approximately £34.5 million USD) for the country’s economy.

Release Date

The first seven episodes of Part 2 will premiere on Netflix on 5 August 2026. The final episode will land on 26 August 2026.
