The star revealed he's upping sticks because of wildfire fears

It was while filming Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) – the second of his four James Bond films – that Pierce Brosnan ‘fell in love’ with South-East Asian architecture. Set in Vietnam but filmed in Thailand, Brosnan was inspired by the wooden beams, clean lines and pools he encountered on set. Seeking to create a tropical paradise for himself, he bought up two separate plots of land in Malibu for just $7.5m in 2000. The Mamma Mia! star lived in a small ranch-style house, that previously occupied the land, for a few years before tearing it down to build his dream home. And by 2010, construction was finally completed on Orchid House, now on the market for $100m.

It’s unfortunate for Brosnan that his home, designed as an eco property to protect the environment, is now being threatened by the environment. Speaking to The Times about the wildfires that have ravaged California in recent years, he said: ‘We’ve been spared by the fires a few times now. But I think it’s time to move. Everything changes; everything falls apart.’ He added: ‘We live by this body of earth’s water on a fault in a ring of earthquakes. That creates a fear.’

At least Brosnan is attempting to do his part against the climate crisis. A keen environmentalist, he designed his Malibu home to be entirely self-sustaining. The main building, outdoor pool and two-storey guesthouse are all powered by solar panels – with enough energy generated by them for the excess to be donated to the grid. The property has also been fitted out with energy saving lights and a low-flow water system to reduce wastage.

Despite the massive savings Brosnan presumably generates through this off-grid set-up, he revealed that the Malibu property costs a lot to keep afloat. He said ‘There have been doldrums. I have this beautiful house in Malibu. I have to pay the mortgage. There are school fees. There are definite moments of, oh, this boat is not quite sinking, but [it might] if we don’t get a job soon.’

And no wonder the mortgage is costing him so much. Spanning 4,000 sq ft of interior space, the property features five bedrooms, and a staggering 14 bathrooms. Described as a ‘once in a lifetime buy’ by realtor Christopher Cortazzo of Compass Real Estate, the compound is decked out in high-end furnishings. Inside, sits a 20-person movie theatre (ideal for a Mamma Mia! double bill or Bond marathon), gym, spa, art studio, two bars and a temperature-controlled wine unit. Outside, the estate boasts over 1.1 acres of oceanfront land on Malibu’s Broad Beach – views are best enjoyed from the spacious patio and beachfront decking.

Today, Pierce Brosnan and his wife – the journalist and author Keely Shaye Smith – split their time between their Malibu compound and their Hawaii home. Brosnan told The Times that they have ‘a little three-bedroom cottage at the end of the road’ in Kauai. Here, they keep their own chickens and have a yurt where Brosnan paints in his downtime.

The couple bought-up the Hawaii home after their sons moved out. But as more of their loved ones move out of Malibu, it looks like Hawaii is set to become their full-time base. ‘I think the two of us are somewhat reclusive. It’s a long way into town,’ said Brosnan. ‘We have a small circle of friends here [but] people get divorced, they die, they move on. And we’re still here.’

The couple first planned to sell their home in 2020. At the time Pierce Brosnan told the Wall Street Journal: ‘It’s time to move on… It’s time to change.’ He added that he loves Malibu and it has his heart, but ‘home is very much here in the islands’.
