This might just be Bridgerton's most swoon-worthy romance yet
Dearest Gentle Reader, the ton is all a-flutter. Why? For there is news of a new Bridgerton spin-off. At last the time has come for us to turn our attention to the Bridgerton matriarch – in a new series chronicling the romance of a young Violet and Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The love match to match all love matches, it’s their perfect marriage that set the gold standard for all their children. Here’s what we know so far.

While Bridgerton‘s core cast of characters – namely, the Bridgerton children and their spouses – never fail to draw in audiences with stories of love and scandal, Netflix also occasionally likes to put the spotlight on the show’s side characters. The first spin-off to hit the streaming platform was Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story in 2023, following a young Queen Charlotte in the early years of her marriage to King George III. It was also in this limited series that we got a quick glimpse of a (very) young Violet Ledger, aka, the future Lady Bridgerton.
It feels fitting, then, that the next spin-off to come from the streamer be about the Bridgerton matriarch’s first love story with her husband, Edmund.
Who Is Edmund Bridgerton?
Edmund Bridgerton is the father of the eight Bridgerton children in the show: Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory and Hyacinth. At the open of series 1, Edmund has been dead nearly a decade.
The only time we ever see a glimpse of him on-screen is in Season 2 Episode 3 ‘A Bee In Your Bonnet’. The episode opens 10 years earlier, where we watch Edmund advising a young Anthony on how to aim his gun. Though Anthony fails to hit the mark, Edmund reassures him that it’s all about confidence. Making their way back to the house, Edmund stops to pick some flowers for Violet and is stung by a bee. Suddenly struggling to breathe, Anthony holds him and calls for help. Violet runs out, heavily pregnant with Hyacinth, but nothing can be done and he dies in their arms.
Although little more is known about Edmund in the show, beyond the occasional anecdote, we do know that he and Violet were deeply, madly, passionately in love. And it is for that reason, that she has struggled to move on for so long.

Is It Based On A Book?
The main Bridgerton television series is based on the bestselling books by Julian Quinn. So far, the only exception to the rule has been Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which (very loosely) relied on historic details of the real life Charlotte and George for its tale. Since its conception, Quinn has adapted the Queen Charlotte screenplay into a companion novel of her own.
Though there is no full-length novel dedicated to Violet and Edmund, Quinn did produce a short novella about their romance titled Violet in Bloom for the collection The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After. Though producer Shonda Rhimes is known to take artistic licence with the source material, it seems likely that the series will be lightly based on this story.
For a largely spoiler free summary, the novella follows Violet Ledger from age eight, when she first encounters a 10-year-old Edmund during a visit to Sussex, through to their reunion at a London ball years later. Their story sounds simple enough, but knowing Bridgerton there will be plenty of twists, turns and yearning along the way.

Who Will Star?
In Bridgerton, Violet is played by Ruth Gemmell. However, it’s not yet clear whether the new series will feature flash-forwards to the present – as it did in Queen Charlotte – or remain firmly in the past. Though she called things off with Lord Marcus Anderson (played by Daniel Francis) at the end of season 4, flicking between the two timelines could be an interesting way to explore a new love in Violet’s life.
In Queen Charlotte, we previously saw Violet portrayed by Connie Jenkins-Greig. Now 22 (almost 23), she’d certainly be old enough to take on the role if it was offered. There’s also a chance that we might see the return of other other familiar faces from Queen Charlotte, including Arsema Thomas who played a young Lady Danbury.

Release Date
No news of a release date as of yet. Right now, we’re still waiting on Bridgerton series 5 to grace our screens. Starring Francesca alongside her late husband’s cousin Michaela, this queer Regency romp is slated for a 2027 release date.
Typically, it takes two years from the announcement for a new Bridgerton series to be released, so fingers crossed for 2028 – if we can wait until then.
