You can't put a price on a good night's sleep... or can you?

On average, we spend a third of our lives in bed – so, naturally, finding the right one is important. Lucky for you, your search for the best luxury bed brands ends right here. Get ready for a magnificent night’s sleep, with our edit of the names to know now.

How To Find The Perfect Bed

When it comes to listing the most important features of a home, the bed sits high on (if not on top of) the list. But what does a luxury bed look and feel like? Defined by top quality materials, superior design credentials and incredible craftsmanship, the ultimate bed is an investment in our overall wellbeing.

‘We believe the most luxurious beds are defined by three things: design, materials, and craftsmanship,’ says the team at luxury bed and mattress maker Savoir. ‘Design is an intimate process – some clients arrive with a clear vision, others prefer to be guided – but in every case, the result must feel entirely their own. A bed is not merely a purchase; it is a long-term investment in rest, comfort and beauty.’

So, what should we look out for? ‘There is no one-size-fits-all policy when it comes to sleep,’ says Mark Tremlett, founder of B Corp bed brand Naturalmat. ‘And as we spend a third of our lives in bed, choosing the right bed, mattress and bedding is key.’ Below, the experts share their top tips for bed shopping:

Expert Tips: What To Look Out For

Invest In The Right Size

‘Knowing what you need from a bed is so important, and getting the size right is a great place to start,’ says Mark. ‘We always say: go as big as your room can handle. No one has ever regretted getting the bigger bed!’

It’s especially important to opt for a bed with more room if you plan to share it with someone, adds the Savoir team. ‘Space is important for sleeping couples, so try to go for the biggest bed you can sensibly fit in the room.’

Consider The Height

You’ll also need to factor in other practical considerations, like the height of the bed. ‘Think about the practicalities of your bed, not just how it looks,’ echoes Mark. ‘Consider how the bed will work for everyone using it day to day, ensuring it’s comfortable to get in and out of, and that the style you choose suits both your room and your lifestyle.’

He adds that taller frames, if compatible with your bedroom, can also ‘offer valuable built-in storage through drawers or an ottoman design, making it a smart choice for those looking to maximise space.’

Pay Attention To Tension

As for the mattress, it’s important to choose one with a tension that supports you. ‘The mattress that’s right for you will keep your spine in proper alignment, supporting your body and cradling it along its curves,’ notes the Savoir team. ‘It will be comfortable and help relieve pressure points, removing the disruption from tossing and turning.’ If you and your partner need different tensions, they advise opting for a dual tension mattress: ‘you can then each have your own tension if you’re sharing a bed with a partner.’

Natural Matters

Where possible, it’s better to opt for natural materials when building your dream bed – as these have a better chance of standing the test of time. ‘Avoid man-made/synthetic materials for mattresses,’ emphasises the Savoir team. ‘Natural materials are incredibly comfortable, create the best sleeping environment by being breathable and temperature-regulating, and are kinder to the environment.’

‘When it comes to your bed, what you sleep on matters just as much as how it looks,’ adds Mark. ‘There is growing awareness around the chemicals found in synthetic foam products, particularly fire retardants and their links to forever chemicals. Choosing a bed made from natural materials is one of the simplest ways to remove those concerns from your bedroom entirely, ensuring the healthiest and most restful environment for sleep.’

Try It On

And finally: don’t be afraid to try before you buy. ‘The most important part of choosing the new mattress is “trying it on”,’ says the Savoir team. ‘Think of it as an investment in your future, because a good mattress will see you sleeping comfortably for at least the next 20 years.’ When trying out your prospective bed, the team suggests you ‘lie in your usual sleeping position; it’s the only way to truly get a feel for what you like in terms of comfort.’

What To Avoid…

As mentioned, the best thing to avoid when it comes to bed shopping is something synthetic. ‘Avoid the temptation of cheap, mass-produced beds or mattresses,’ emphasises Mark. ‘Not only do synthetic materials raise concerns around chemicals and fire retardants, but low-quality products are also far more likely to end up in landfill within just a few years.’
