The History Of Cubberley Estate
With a history spanning all the way back to the 13th century, this noble estate is rich in aristocratic heritage, intrinsically tied to the prestigious Cubberley family of Gloucestershire. First listed for sale in 1733, the estate has since been home to prominent aristocratic families, including the Collins family, Esq., as well as descendants of the 5th Duke of Beaufort (the peerage created by Charles II in the 17th century) now known as the Somerset family, who expanded the estate’s lands and legacy over the centuries. Despite its rich history, like many historic properties, Cubberley Estate was eventually abandoned to time and left to wither away.
Change In Fate
Seeking to preserve this historic estate for the future, in 1968 Lord Greville Janner stepped in to save its legacy. Rebuilding the property while carefully preserving its grandeur, the design was later elevated by renowned Kenyan-British singer Roger Whittaker and the support of the wealthy Kronsbein family. Applauded for its fusion of period features and modern design which successfully tie together the old and the new, Cubberley Estate soon came to be known as the House of the Century.
Step Inside And Out
Inside, the grand gallery entrance opens into a series of elegant rooms, including the Blue Room, a noble dining room, private library, and the Cubberley Bar. With its blend of historic charm and modern sophistication, this Regency-style mansion spans 110 metres of idyllic countryside near Ross-on-Wye. Set against the panoramic views of landscaped gardens, woodlands and the River Wye (where you can also enjoy exclusive fishing rights), the property offers outdoor pursuits such as horse riding and clay pigeon shooting. As well as, of course, all the room you could ever need to host lavishly large gatherings. And just in case the extensive grounds weren’t enough to satisfy your thirst for grandeur, the Wellness Centre at Cubberley Estate features a 20-metre swimming pool, tennis court, sauna, Technogym equipped gym, changing rooms and an outdoor hot tub overlooking the countryside.
Beyond the central property, the smaller Aylesmarsh Cottage is located by the entrance to Cubberley Estate, its spacious private garden enjoying views of the estate’s sheep meadows and ancient woodland. This additional home comes with a fully equipped kitchen, a cosy living room, three bedrooms and a light-filled orangerie. The Lodge, meanwhile – which can be used for staff or extended family – includes a kitchen and living room on the ground floor alongside two upstairs bedrooms.
Where Is It?
Cubberley Estate lies within the Wye Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and one of England’s most unspoiled regions, renowned for its sweeping views and unique natural features. At the heart of this region and within two miles of the estate lies Ross-on-Wye, a historic market town known for its medieval charm, Tudor-era buildings, and rich history. The town’s traditional streets offer cultural richness alongside a full range of shopping and day to day amenities. The area is well connected with the M50 motorway, starting at Ross-on-Wye which connects to the M5 and wider motorway network.
