Which Celebrities Live In Wales? (& Where?)

From Joanna Page to Tom Jones, Wales has given Britain some of our best-loved stars. But not every Welsh-born icon still calls Cymru home. Ever wondered which celebrities live in Wales? Here’s your complete guide to the Wales celeb set.

The Wales Celeb Set

Bear Grylls

It’s only fitting that the world’s biggest survival fanatic should own an off-grid private island – free from mains electricity, running water or reliable phone signal. Bear Grylls purchased Saint Tudwal’s Island West in 2001 for approximately £95,000. Located off the Llŷn Peninsula, the 20-acre isle includes two converted lighthouse keeper’s cottage and a 200-year-old lighthouse.

Only accessibly via boat, grey seals, bottlenose dolphins, porpoises and otters can all be spotted on the surrounding shores. As Bear said of his Welsh escape on Facebook: ‘This place has been one of the greatest things we ever bought as a family – aged 25 it was a scary first project but it’s become what I believe is the coolest home on the planet!’

Jerome Flynn

Though born and raised in Bromley, in the early 2000s Games of Thrones and 1923 actor Jerome Flynn upped sticks to the small Pembrokeshire village of Llanrhian. An active member of the local Welsh community, he even established a wellness retreat called Trefacwn around a 17th century, Grade II listed farm nearby to his home. Discussing his love of the area on screen, the actor reunited with his Soldier, Soldier co-star and ex singing partner Robson Green on episode 2 of ITV’s 2017 series Tales from the Coast with Robson Green, in which the pair walked the Welsh coastline, sea kayaked around Ramsey Island and navigated local tidal rapids.

James Dean Bradfield 

Born in Newport and raised in Blackwood in south Wales, Manic Street Preachers frontman James Dean Bradfield briefly lived in London before moving back to Cardiff in late 2009. Today, he lives in the Welsh capital with his wife and their two children. Speaking of his life in Wales, he told The Times: ‘My wife and I share school run and dog walking duties. Where I live we can go walking in the Islwyn valley, where I grew up, the Brecon Beacons or Ogmore beach in the Vale of Glamorgan. I tell my dog she’s lucky. My life is built around equidistant possibilities: I’m connected to the city but can reach mountain, valley, beach or park in 30 minutes.’

He added that coming from Wales, he did feel insecurities growing up, especially after the miner’s strikers. However, he has ‘always felt very connected to the landscape and the people. I owe Wales a lot and love living here.’

Nicky Wire

Luckily for Bradfield, his Manic Street Preachers bandmate Nicky Wire lives nearby. Having also grown up in Blackwood – Bradfield, Wire and Sean Moore started the band together while in school – today he lives in the leafy suburb of Allt-yr-yn in Newport with his family.

Catherine Zeta Jones & Michael Douglas

Whilst the Wednesday star owns homes across the globe, from New York to Spain, the Welsh-born actress still has a Welsh base of her own. Catherine Zeta-Jones and her husband Michael Douglas own a luxury new-build in her hometown of Mumbles near Swansea. The four-bedroom property, which was contructed in 2004, was primarily designed as a home for her parents, Dai and Pat. However, Zeta-Jones and her family also stay at Mumbles abode when visiting her home country.

Griff Rhys-Jones

These days, the Welsh-born actor and comedian Griff Rhys-Jones primarily lives in Suffolk. However, he still has a Welsh estate of his own, namely a Pembrokeshire farm which he rents out as a luxury holiday-let business when he and his family aren’t staying over.

He bought the derelict estate in 2004 and spent nearly two decades restoring the traditional stone buildings and Georgian farmhouse. The restoration of this cottage was the subject of the BBC TV series Return to a Pembrokeshire Farm. Today, Griff remains actively involved with the estate and has spoken publicly on local tourism and heritage conservation issues in the area.

As a result of his restoration, the six-bedroom Bwythn Trehilyn is widely considered one of the best holiday cottages in all of Wales. Under 10 minutes from Abermawr beach, the restored property sits within 70 acres of rugged Welsh countryside, including a private lake. 

Michael Sheen

If anybody’s making it to heaven, it’s Good Omens stars Michael Sheen. In 2019 he sold his home in Wales and a property in the US in order to fund the Homeless World Cup in his hometown of Port Talbot, after the original funding collapsed at the last minute and the event was set to be cancelled. The ‘not for profit actor’ also bought-up £1m worth of debt racked up by locals and neighbours in Port Talbot, detailing the story of his donation in his Channel 4 documentary Secret Million Pound Giveaway.

Though born in Newport, Michael Sheen spent most of his childhood in Port Talbot. He returned to the Welsh town to work on a play in 2011, and was inspired to move back and give back to his local community. He still lives in a three-storey house in Port Talbot today with his wife, fellow actor Anna Lundberg, and their children.

Charlotte Church

Another Welsh star to remain loyal to her roots, Charlotte Church lives in the Elan Valley near Rhayader in Powys, having sold her Cardiff home for £2.1m in 2024. And it is near here that she operates her wellness retreat known as The Dreaming.

Initially on the hunt for a field from which to found a glamping business, she instead stumbled across Rhydoloh House – the former home of designer Laura Asley – and fell ‘madly in love’. She put down £1.5m for it and budgeted £500,000 for the renovation. ‘Every member of my family and every one of my friends thought I was mad,’ she said of the project. The renovations were all captured on camera for her docu-series, Charlotte Church’s Dream Build, which aired in 2022 on Discover+.

Set within 49 acres of land, it was this surrounding countryside that really captured Charlotte’s heart. ‘It’s flanked by two incredible waterfalls and feels so magical, restorative and peaceful,’ she told The Metro. ‘When I started thinking about how I could create a wellness centre, a retreat that was affordable for everyone, suddenly everything fell into place.’ 

Paul Potts 

Much like Susan Boyle, Britain’s Got Talent series one winner Paul Potts didn’t move far following his reality TV success. The opera singer remains in his hometown of Port Talbot, where he lives with his wife Julie-Ann. They did, however, update from their Edward Street abode to a 1930s Art-Deco villa named Sunray, on the more up-market Balgan Road, following his big win. ‘We wanted somewhere local because we both love the area, and Jules [Julie-Ann] has her family close by,’ he said of the move.

Their home was originally known as Mugs’ Villa, because it was built by local bookie Val Jones from the proceeds of his gambling shops. ‘We can truly see ourselves living the remainder of our days here,’ added Paul. ‘From the roof garden, towards the end of the day, I watched the sun set over Mumbles and Swansea Bay. It truly was a sight to behold, and most of all, after a very full 15 months, it was ours.’

Dr Alex George 

Originally from Carmantheshire in Wales, the doctor turned Love Island star turned TV personality has made a comeback to his home country. In 2022, Dr Alex George purchased four Welsh cottages – three of which he plans to use as short-term holiday lets, and the fourth to house a Ukrainian refugee family.
