The OG Art Basel fair returns to Switzerland in June
Calling all culture vultures, the gold standard of art fairs, Art Basel in Switzerland is back from 18 to 21 June 2026, with preview days taking place on 16 and 17 June, as collectors, galleries, artists and luxury brands arrive in the city for one of the most prominent weeks in the global art calendar. What started in Basel in 1970 is now considered the art world’s leading fair, with editions in Miami Beach, Hong Kong, Paris and Qatar.
This year’s fair will see 290 galleries from 43 countries and territories arrive in Basel, including 21 newcomers, while the wider city embraces the creativity with museum exhibitions, dinners and private events throughout the week. Partners this year include UBS, Qatar Airways, BMW, Audemars Piguet and Ruinart, with the show’s director Maike Cruse saying: ‘For one week, Basel becomes the central meeting point of the art world – where historic depth meets bold new production across the halls and throughout the city.’

What Is Art Basel, Basel?
A clue is in the title, Art Basel, Basel is the original edition and considered to be the most important fair in the contemporary art market calendar. Galleries from around the world travel to Messe Basel to showcase works spanning modern, post-war, contemporary and emerging art. This sits alongside installations, sculpture trails, museum exhibitions and private events that take place throughout the week, and across the city.
What Happens During The Week?
The main fair takes place inside Messe Basel, where galleries present curated booths spanning 20th-century works through to newly commissioned contemporary installations. Around the fair, Basel galleries, luxury brands and institutions such as Fondation Beyeler, Kunstmuseum Basel and Schaulager host dinners, parties and major exhibitions throughout the week. Richard Mille, which co-hosts Fondation Beyeler’s Garden Party during Art Basel week, says its relationship with the institution is built on shared beliefs and a dialogue between disciplines, reflecting the increasingly blurred boundaries between art, culture and craftsmanship.

That evolution is also reflected in the wider market as Carola Wiese, senior art advisor at UBS Global Wealth Management, points to a ‘more diverse and digitally fluent generation of collectors’, for whom contemporary art increasingly sits at the centre of wider luxury and lifestyle culture. As Wiese notes, collecting today is not just ‘a reflection of identity and a deeply personal pursuit’, but also ‘a gateway to meaningful experiences’.
Across the city, large-scale public artworks and installations also form part of the programme, including new commissions by Nairy Baghramian and Ibrahim Mahama, plus, the latest edition of Parcours, Art Basel’s public art trail curated again by Stefanie Hessler.
The Sections
The fair is organised into several sections, and each one focuses on different parts of the market. Unlimited is known for its museum-sized works that wouldn’t fit inside a traditional gallery booth, while Parcours places installations and public interventions in the streets of Basel. Premiere focuses on works made within the past five years, and Statements spotlights emerging artists via solo presentations.
What To Wear
In keeping with Basel and its understated luxury, Art Basel style is polished with a dash of creativity; think archival fashion and vintage finds, with Marcelle Symons of One Vintage offering chic day and evening options. It’s a place for 60s Dior shift dresses and, for the more extrovert dressers, prints from Alemais, surrealist-inspired fashion from Portuguese luxury label Paula, and smart two pieces from ME+EM, topped off with interesting jewellery from Delfina Delettrez, Rosa de la Cruz, and vintage Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti pieces.
