Here's who took home a prize last night
Awards season is in full swing, and last night we were back on home turf celebrating the return of the BAFTA Film Awards. These are the most prestigious film awards in the UK, and while they are international in scope, there are plenty of categories that seek to reward British talent in particular.
After the nominees were revealed by by Aimee Lou Wood and 2025’s EE Rising Star David Jonsson on 27 January, we’ve been scrambling to watch every film up for a prize – especially the five commended in the prestigious Best Film category.
And now the winners are finally here, following a glitzy central London ceremony attended by everyone from Kate Hudson to Munroe Bergdorf, Warwick Davis to Timothée Chalamet. After the awards were announced at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, the celebrants went on to the official afterparty hosted just across the river at the National Portrait Gallery.
Keep reading for the headlines and the winners in full.

The Headlines
A total of 46 films were nominated at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards, which BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip described as ‘[showcasing] the very best of storytelling and its ability to engage, entertain and provoke debate’. But of course everyone can’t go home with a trophy, and a total of 12 films triumphed over the rest.
That includes six wins for Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another from 14 nominations, including Best Picture, the evening’s best performance. PTA’s acclaimed film, which also has 13 nominations at the Oscars, takes the director’s personal BAFTA wins from one to four.
Speaking of the BAFTA’s stateside counterpart, while Sinners has the most Oscar nominations not just in 2026 but of all time, the film converted 13 nominations (the highest for a Black director in BAFTA history) into just three wins, including Original Screenplay for director Ryan Coogler and Best Supporting Actress for Nigerian-British star Wunmi Mosaku.
Another leading film in 2026 was Frankenstein: while it didn’t make any headline wins, Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Gothic classic novel bagged three wins for behind-the-scenes work.

In British news, Chloé Zhao’s moving adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling novel Hamnet walked away with Outstanding British Film, while Irish star Jessie Buckley took home the Leading Actress trophy for her part as Agnes. Meanwhile it was a big evening for Hull’s Robert Aramayo who took home both the EE Rising Star Award and the Leading Actor award for his starring role in I Swear, beating out heavyweights like Leonardo DiCaprio and Timotheé Chalamet for the latter and becoming the first person to win the duo of prizes since Billy Elliot star Jamie Bell in 2001.
Elsewhere Norwegian flick Sentimental Value bagged Best Film Not in the English Language (against Brazil’s popular The Secret Agent) while Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, starring Chalamet, didn’t win a jot from its 11 nominations.

So what does this mean looking ahead to the Oscars? One Battle After Another seems a shoe-in for Best Picture, while Aramayo’s win could spell success at 2027’s Oscars, where it will qualify thanks to a 2026 US release. In 2026, Chalamet is the frontrunner for Best Actor at the Oscars, where he won’t have to trump Aramayo but counts competition in Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, Michael B Jordan and Wagner Moura.
And where Brazil’s The Secret Agent was considered a frontrunner for Best International Feature at the Oscars, Norway’s BAFTA win for Sentimental Value proves that isn’t a done deal.
Meanwhile Sean Penn’s Supporting Actor win throws more confusion into the season, with Stellan Skarsgard, Jacob Elordi and Benicio del Toro all winning gongs in equivalent categories across other ceremonies. Mosaku’s win was similarly unforetold – but gives the Brit strong momentum going into the Oscars, where she is up for the same prize.
If you would like more of an insight into the judging and voting process, we have a nitty gritty guide to the BAFTA Film Awards here.
