Neil Forsyth's undercover crime thriller has proven to be a streaming hit – but what does the future hold?
Netflix’s Legends has garnered rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, and since premiering on 7 May, it’s fair to say the British crime drama has become a global hit. Created and written by Neil Forsyth – the mastermind behind BBC’s crime hit The Gold – the thriller has gripped viewers hungry for tense, character-driven storytelling set against the gritty backdrop of 1990s Britain’s war on drugs. Legends follows a covert government operation in which everyday customs officers are recruited to infiltrate criminal gangs using false identities, or ‘legends’. It’s a world of double lives, impossible choices, and the kind of moral ambiguity we always find compelling.
With such strong initial reception, fans are already wondering: will there be a Legends season 2? Here’s everything we know so far.

Legends Season 2: Will It Happen?
While creator Neil Forsyth and Netflix have yet to officially confirm a second series, there are several encouraging signs that Legends‘ future is bright. Firstly, unlike fellow Netflix original series such as Baby Reindeer and Adolescence, Legends isn’t marked as a ‘limited series’, meaning the door for a potential second season has been propped open from the start.
Secondly, numbers talk. Netflix has a track record of renewing series that captivate audiences in their first 30 days on the platform, and with the series sitting at #3 in the UK and #4 in the US, there’s no question that Legends fits this bill. There are even rumors that a second season of ‘limited-series’ Adolescence is in the works, so successful was the four-part, one-shot thriller.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the series is inspired by real-life customs officer Guy Stanton and his 2022 memoir, The Betrayer: How an Undercover Unit Infiltrated the Global Drug Trade. The memoir documents Stanton’s infiltration of Turkish and Kurdish gangs trafficking heroin from Afghanistan into the UK – but that’s merely the beginning. Stanton went on to work undercover for another decade, during which he ended up in South America, blindfolded and taken to a warehouse by a contact of Pablo Escobar’s cousin.

Across his 11 years, he also survived being shot at with an Uzi machine gun in Curaçao, escaped a trap set up for him in Kenya, and had to testify in The Hague against the drug traffickers who were his targets. Stanton’s story took a darker turn when police turned on him, wrongly accusing him of taking bribes from his contact (called Mylonas in the series). He was subject to a two-year investigation, which was eventually dropped due to lack of evidence. All of this is to say that The Betrayer contains enough jaw-dropping material to sustain multiple seasons of Legends.
When working on season 1, creator Forsyth backed Stanton’s memoir testimony up with his own extensive research, which included conducting interviews with many former customs officers who also became spies. As he explained, ‘I conducted lots of interviews, some with people who were happy to talk to me publicly, others who needed to be a bit more clandestine. The more I listened, the more extraordinary the tale revealed itself to be. I did need to condense and simplify it, because otherwise it would be extremely complicated and we’d have far too many characters.’

Who Will Return?
If renewed, we’d likely see Tom Burke return as Guy, alongside Charlotte Ritchie as his wife Sophie – particularly given that Guy was left looking over his shoulder in the finale, suggesting the fear of reprisal could follow him into a new outing.
Steve Coogan, who has won considerable praise for his role as the droll Don, could also return. As for the ensemble – Bailey (Aml Ameen), Kate (Hayley Squires), and Erin (Jasmine Blackborow) – it’s likely they’d reunite for Legends season 2, too, depending on the storylines.

Release Date
Legends was first commissioned in 2024 and released in 2026. If the second season does get confirmed and it follows the same timeline, we might expect to see a follow-up series released at some point in 2028.
All six episodes of Legends are currently streaming on Netflix.
