Paramount+ users are likely well-acquainted with this big-hitting American crime-thriller series, led by Jeremy Renner. If you haven’t heard of it, Mayor of Kingstown is set in the titular Kingstown, a Michigan town best known for its prisons. In the tense first two seasons, we’ve seen Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) rise into the (unofficial) role of town ‘mayor’, attempting to maintain peace within and between the prisons, corrupt businesses and the McLusky family itself. And, lucky for us, it is returning for a third season. If you’ve never tuned in or you’re looking for a recap, here’s everything you need to know about Mayor of Kingstown season 3.

From the creator of Paramount+’s hit series Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan with actor Hugh Dillon, Mayor of Kingstown is a gritty crime drama perfect for fans of Breaking Bad and the Irish drug-gang series Kin.

What Is Mayor Of Kingstown About?

Centring on the powerful McLusky family, Mayor of Kingstown is all about America’s corrupt prison system, specifically in this fictional Michigan town. The McLusky family has deep roots in Kingstown, and has evolved into a group of power brokers with significant influence over the town’s affairs. When the eldest McLusky brother, Mitch (Kyle Chandler) – who inherited the role from the town’s first ‘mayor’, his father – dies, the middle McLusky brother, who always dreamed of escaping Kingstown, must step into the role.

Of course, the role takes some settling into, and Mike grapples to mediate peace between street gangs, prisoners, prison guards and the police. The youngest McLusky brother, meanwhile, is a police officer: Kyle (Taylor Handley) struggles to square his duty as a detective for the Kingstown Police Department with the business dealings of his family and, by the second season, he has transferred to the Michigan State Police so there is more separation.

Elsewhere, the McLusky matriarch is Miriam (Dianne Wiest), a college professor who volunteers teaching inmates at the women’s prison; let’s just say she’s not too keen on her sons’ activities.

Where Is Mayor Of Kingstown Set?

Mayor of Kingstown is set in a town called Kingstown in the state of Michigan.

Is Kingstown A Real Place?

No, Kingstown is a fictional town, but is said to be in Michigan, USA. While this partially draws on Michigan’s reputation as a crime-filled state – with Detroit one of the nation’s crime capitals – it is also inspired by the town co-creator Dillon grew up in: Kingston, Ontario. While Kingstown has seven prisons, Canada’s Kingston has a whopping nine prisons, so Dillon is well-placed to shed light on a town fuelled by the prison industrial complex.

What Will Happen In Season 3?

Details are being kept under wraps, but we’re anticipating Mayor of Kingstown season 3 will show the fallout of the attack on Kingstown which we saw at the end of season 2. If you need a recap, the season finale saw lots of life-or-death decisions being made as the war between police, prisons and crime bosses spilled out onto the town’s streets, with Mike grappling to keep everything together – while simultaneously plotting his own escape.

One thing we do know about season 3 is that one major character will be leaving: Dianne Wiest as Mariam, the McLusky mother. According to Deadline, she won’t return for season 3 but her exit will be ‘story driven’. With season 2 leaving Miriam in hospital – undergoing surgery after being accidentally shot by her youngest son, Kyle – we’re anticipating another McLusky death. But will this be the final straw for Mike?

Why Was It Delayed?

Mayor of Kingstown season 3 has been delayed for a number of reasons, primarily the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes and Jeremy Renner’s catastrophic accident on 1 January 2023. Renner was hit and run over by a snowplow, suffering blunt chest trauma and a whopping 30 broken bones. Miraculously, Renner was out of the hospital by 17 January, continuing his recovery at home, and was beginning to walk again with the aid of a cane 10 weeks after the accident. By September 2023, it was confirmed that Mayor of Kingstown would be returning for a third season, with Renner well enough to reprise his role as Mike.

Will There Be A Season 4?

Whatever happens in season 3, we expect a long future for Mayor of Kingstown. Speaking to ComicBook in early 2023, co-creator Hugh Dillon revealed, ‘we’ve got a big future planned for Mayor,’ explaining that he and Sheridan had been constructing the show for over a decade, egging each other on by asking, ‘Then what happens?’.
