One Of Us delves into the British establishment
We’re always pleased to see a new book by podcast extraordinaire Elizabeth Day on the horizon – but never more so than now. The How To Fail host is set to launch her upcoming novel, One Of Us, at Cadogan Hall this September in an event held in partnership with Fane. It’s part of the inaugural Chelsea Arts Festival in September, hosted by C&TH Events.
‘I am so delighted to be launching my new novel with a one-off event at the Chelsea Arts Festival, in London’s iconic Cadogan Hall on Sunday 21 September,’ Elizabeth says. ‘It’s a real honour to be featured alongside such a stellar cast of cultural luminaries and I think it’s the perfect way to introduce readers to the characters and plot of One Of Us. Come and join us for an entertaining Sunday afternoon, then retire to the pub for an early evening pint and roast… Perfect.’
Tickets for the event are on sale now. But first, here’s everything we know so far about One Of Us.

One Of Us By Elizabeth Day: Plot, Release Date & More
Elizabeth Day is the author of nine works, the most recent being Friendaholic, a non-fiction confessional book delving into the unique, non-romantic bonds forged between friends. Comfortably flitting between fiction and non-fiction, her next publication, One Of Us, is Elizabeth’s sixth novel, joining her Betty Trask Award-winning debut Scissors Paper Stone (2012) and her most recent Sunday Times bestselling work, Magpie (2021). The latter is tale of fertility and boundaries, centred on a perfect couple and their seemingly perfect lodger, showcasing Elizabeth’s skill crafting a a taut and suspenseful story. And, all about betrayal, old bonds and buried scandals, One of Us solidifies this…
What Will Happen?
One of Us centres on Martin, who we meet seven years after a devastating fallout with his best friend Ben Fitzmaurice at the latter’s 40th birthday party. So when Martin is unexpectedly invited back into the orbit of Ben’s dazzlingly powerful family, he just can’t resist. What better window of opportunity to enact his revenge?
By this time, Ben is a rising political star being touted as the next Prime Minister. As Martin re-enters the starry Fitzmaurice universe, he uncovers unsettling cracks: Ben’s seemingly trapped wife, Serena; their rebellious environmental activist of a daughter, Cosima, who resists everything her parents once stood for; a desperate former MP determined to make his comeback; and the suspicious, untimely death of Fliss, Ben’s sister and the Fitzmaurice black sheep.
Through their interwoven lives, a tale of betrayal, buried scandals and the corrosive cost of privilege unfolds, and Martin and Ben are forced to confront the true meaning of love and loyalty when everything is at stake. Meanwhile, both a family and a nation are suffocating under the weight of their own secrets.
Published by 4th Estate, the synopsis for One Of Us asks, ‘In the inner circle, where can you hide a secret?
‘In this compulsive story of betrayal, old bonds and buried scandals, one British establishment family comes face to face with the consequences of privilege and the true cost of power,’ 4th Estate summarises.
