Outlander: Blood Of My Blood Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

A younger generation are taking over Diana Gabaldon’s universe
Outlander may be drawing to a close after eight seasons and a whopping 101 episodes (by the time the finale airs on 8 May 2026), but it’s a bittersweet goodbye – because we are also saying hello to a whole new generation of Outlander stars. This is thanks to the prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood, which premiered in summer 2025 to a rave response from fans.
Starring Harriet Slater, Jamie Roy, Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine as a leading quartet, while there aren’t any familiar faces in Blood of My Blood, there are plenty of familiar names. The historical drama follows the parents of Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Beauchamp (Caitriona Balfe), the protagonists in the original series.
However, because Jamie and Claire are from different time periods, Blood of My Blood paints too wonderful pictures in tandem: one of 18th century Scotland when Ellen MacKenzie (Slater) meets Brian Fraser (Roy); and the other of WWI England, when Julia Moriston (Corfield) meets Henry Beauchamp (Irvine). Their fateful meetings – and unions – lay the groundwork for the time-defying love story that unfolds with drama, angst and passion in Outlander.
It was always going to be a hit with fans – and TV network Starz pre-empted the show’s success by renewing it for season 2 before season 1 even arrived. As star Rory Alexander told C&TH last summer, ‘It’s very exciting. It’s nice that they’ve renewed Blood of my Blood before it’s even out; it shows a level of confidence in the show, for sure.’
With filming now wrapped and the Outlander finale fast approaching, here’s everything we know so far about Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 2.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2: Plot, Cast, Release Date & More
First, a quick recap: season 1 left both of our romantic duos in precarious situations. First, the Scots: after discovering her younger brother Colum (Seamus McClean Ross) tried to have Brian killed, Ellen chooses to flee with her lover. But as they leave Castle Leoch, they run into Malcolm Grant (Jhon Lumsden), the man to whom Ellen is betrothed and the new laird of Clan Grant. When Malcolm insults Ellen and attacks her lover, Brian kills him in self-defense.
Eventually they escape, but danger heightens the next morning when the clan lights the warning crosses, summoning men to join the Jacobite rebellion. If Brian refuses to answer the call, he risks being branded a traitor.
Meanwhile in the 20th century, Henry and Julia are on the run, with Arch Bug (Terence Rae) closing in as they try to take their son, William, through the stones at Craigh Na Dun. The rules of time travel remain unclear: can a baby make the journey, and don’t they need gemstones to do it?

What Will Happen?
In season 2, our Scottish duo will also have to deal with the fallout of Malcolm’s murder, while Ellen reckons with Colm’s betrayal. When we asked McLean Ross, who plays Colum, what we have in store for season 2, he said: ‘I’ll just say, like the actors, audiences will go even deeper into learning more of their favourite character’s back stories, especially in the run up to the Battle of Sheriffmuir. Nothing lasts forever.’
Cryptic… Whatever happens, we know Ellena and Brian will face their foes as a team. As Ellen said in the season 1 finale, ‘I’m your wife and we are one’.
The Jacobite rising is also on the horizon, and with stars teasing season 2 has ‘gone up a level’, we think there could be some big battle sequences in the pipeline.
Meanwhile for Julia and Henry, season 1 ended before we could find out whether they successfully travelled back to their home in the 20th century with baby William – so only season 2 will deliver the answers we’re craving.

Is It Based On A Book?
Outlander: Blood of My Blood may be a prequel to Outlander, which is based on American author Diana Gabaldon’s epic series of novels, but it isn’t itself based on any books – yet.
Gabaldon has teased she is working on a novel which will delve into Jamie’s parents, Ellen and Brian, who star in Blood of My Blood – and perhaps two sequels. The author wrote on her website: ‘No doubt the new TV series (Blood of My Blood) and this book will have a few things in common.’ But first, she has to wrap up and publish her tenth Outlander novel.
In the meantime, Gabaldon is on the Blood of My Blood writing team, penning episodes 9 and 10.

Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander Novels
Beginning with the series’ first, published in 1991, there are nine novels in Gabaldon’s Outlander series, with a tenth (and final) novel in the works. They are:
- Outlander (1991) (published in the UK as Cross Stitch)
- Dragonfly in Amber (1992)
- Voyager (1993)
- Drums of Autumn (1996)
- The Fiery Cross (2001)
- A Breath of Snow and Ashes (2005)
- An Echo in the Bone (2009)
- Written in My Own Heart’s Blood (2014)
- Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone (2021)
- A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out (TBD)

Where Is It Filmed?
Just as with the original series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1 was filmed across Scotland – and the same is true of season 2. As the series’ head of locations Beverley Syme told C&TH: ‘With the story being set in Scotland, it felt that we could get back to basics and showcase Scotland at its very best.’
We expect a number of locations to return, including Doune Castle as Castle Leoch, home of the MacKenzie clan. You can read our full breakdown of season 1’s filming locations here.
