Coming to Apple TV this week, Jake Gyllenhaal leads this eight-part limited series
Swifties, look away now. Coming to Apple TV this week is Presumed Innocent, a brand new high-octane eight part limited series starring and executive produced by Jake Gyllenhaal. Here’s everything to know before you tune in.
Presumed Innocent: All The Details
Presumed Innocent was first announced in February 2022, with David E Kelley set to adapt Scott Turow’s best selling novel into an eight-part miniseries for Apple TV. Flash forward to December 2022 and more progress was being made, with Gyllenhaal now attached to the project, both to star and executive produce. By January 2023, further cast announcements were made, with Greg Yaitanes and Anne Sewitsky hired to direct. Filming finally kicked off in February 2023.
‘This series has been created by two behemoths of television, J J Abrams and David E Kelley, and it’s very human,’ Gyllenhaal recently shared in a behind-the-scenes video. ‘A seemingly very human mistake becomes blown into this Shakespearean tragedy and thriller. Not only is it a whodunnit, it’s really a story about relationships and intimacy.’
What Is Presumed Innocent About?
Presumed Innocent transports us to Chicago, where Rusty Sabich (Gyllenhaal) is the chief deputy prosecutor in the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office. But when a horrific murder of a member of staff takes place, the whole office is upended when one of its own is suspected of the crime: Rusty.
Over eight episodes, Presumed Innocent explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love as Rusty fights to hold his family and marriage together, all while battling to prove his innocence.
‘What I think will surprise viewers the most,’ says Ruth Negga, who plays Rusty’s wife Barbara, ‘is the ending.’
‘The characters are all so detailed,’ adds O-T Fagbenle, who plays Nico. ‘They all contain within them the potential for murder.’
Meanwhile, Peter Sarsgaard, who plays Tommy, says: ‘I like the moral complexities of every character in this show. There’s good things and bad things. None of us knew who did it until the final episode.’
