What Is The Diplomat About?

In case you’re yet to tune in, The Diplomat is a political thriller and drama series on Netflix created by Debora Cahn (who previously worked on West Wing and Homeland). Season 1 of the political thriller, which debuted in April 2023, centres around Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), a seasoned career American diplomat who is unexpectedly appointed as the US Ambassador to the UK, following a catastrophic attack on a British aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, which ignites a high-stakes international crisis.

More comfortable handling messy geopolitical situations than navigating high-society protocol, Kate must balance the complexities of her job with her turbulent marriage to her husband, and fellow ambassador Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell). As the Netflix synopsis surmises: ‘With as much tension in their own relationship as in the wider realm of foreign affairs, every move made – and every word uttered – is as filled with passion as it is suspicion.’

Since the release of season 1, The Diplomat has gone on to become a Golden Globe–, Emmy-, Actor-, PGA-, WGA-, and Critics Choice–nominated series. Following season 3, Russell (who also serves as an executive producer on the show) won the Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, and Allison Janney won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal as US president Grace Penn.

What Happened In The Diplomat Season 4? Spoilers Ahead…

In season 4 of The Diplomat, Kate fights to heal the wound between the US and UK, while US president Grace Penn and Kate’s husband-turned-vice-president Hal Wyler conspire to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon – a move that threatens to hurtle the US towards war. Kate and Grace’s husband, Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford), are at best an uneasy pair but must unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power, both abroad and at home.

In the last few moments of the finale, Penn not only threatens to attack any country that stands in the way of the US’s risky new mission, but also pushes Kate to the point of resigning from her role as ambassador. In the last few minutes, Appiah and US Secretary of State Miguel Ganon (Miguel Sandoval) follow in her footsteps. And in a surprising, last-minute move, so does Hal.

‘It is very important in terms of what we’re looking at, [to consider] what you can do as a group that you can’t do as an individual, or what will make a difference as a group that won’t make a difference as an individual,’ said Cahn of that shocking finale. ‘Moral contagion works in both directions.’
