After the stonking success of season 1 (which premiered in March 2024), Netflix renewed The Gentlemen for a second season last summer – and filming is finally happening more than a year later.

Theo James, Kaya Scodelario and Daniel Ings are all set to return to their roles of Eddie Horniman, Susie Glass and Freddy Horniman respectively, with Netflix teasing the reprise will take an even deeper look at the criminal underbelly of aristocratic Britain.

Inspired by Guy Ritchie’s 2019 film – also called The Gentlemen – and helmed by the famed British director, the first season saw Eddie rise into the role of the new Duke of Halstead following the death of his father, only to discover his family’s sizable country estate was being used as a weed farm with his approval. Hesitant to join the criminal lifestyle at first, Eddie eventually develops a taste for it, finding unlikely allyship in the glamorous Susie Glass.

‘With its gun-toting chickens and drug-dealing Dukes, The Gentlemen was a huge hit with audiences in 2024,’ the UK content VP for Netflix told Variety. ‘Not really a surprise as Guy Ritchie remains one of the industry’s most iconic creators telling authentically British stories with his signature swagger, grit and wit. We are thrilled the series will be returning to Netflix for a second season, and cannot wait to see what happens when the worlds of old money and drug money collide once more.’

Guy Ritchie will return as director, teaming up with Matthew Read to write season 2.

What Will Happen?

Plot details are scant, but Netflix has given us our first teaser of the action. ‘It’s been one year since Eddie and Susie joined forces to work together in Bobby’s criminal empire overseas,’ the logline reads. ‘As they drive to expand their enterprise, the decisions Bobby is making seem to be increasingly unsound. Now Eddie and Susie must decide whether to take action or risk losing it all, but unfettered ambition never ends well…’.

At the end of season 1, we saw Eddie drawn deeper into the criminal underworld he spent so long resisting, now in an equal partnership with Susie and Bobby Glass. Meanwhile, season 1 closed with Bobby and Stanley dining together in prison, hinting at a brewing alliance – so we’re sure we will see the repercussions of this in season 2.

‘It’d be fun to see the business spread a bit more,’ Scodelario told Netflix’s Tudum when season 1 launched. ‘How do they take it to the next level? They’re very adamant about not getting into the chop game, so how do they then continue to build the empire? Where does that take them? How does the new structure of the business work practically?’

And Scodelario’s wish is Netflix’s command, with creator Guy Ritchie describing season 2 as ‘a deliberate expansion, both geographically and thematically, as we journey from the English countryside to the Italian lakes’.

‘Eddie and Susie find themselves navigating an increasingly volatile empire as they’re besieged on all fronts by an influx of enigmatic new players,’ Ritchie adds. ‘The stakes are heightened, the power dynamics are more precarious, and I’m thrilled to be collaborating once again with this exceptional cast and crew.’

On Eddie and Susie’s developing working relationship, James added, ‘I think they’ve grown to love each other in their own way, but I think they’ll never fully trust each other because they are so different and they’re from such vastly different worlds. There’s a love between them, but ultimately they will never be from the same cloth.’ Let’s see how well they navigate being equal partners, then…
