Plus, everything we know about the upcoming final season

In recent years, many of our favourite long-running shows have come to an end – think Succession, Ted Lasso and Peaky Blinders – and the next one gearing up for its finale is Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Here’s how you can stream all seasons of the show in the UK, as well as what to expect from the final instalment.

When Does The Season 6 Come Out?

Following last year’s strikes in Hollywood, it’s expected that the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale will hit screens sometime in 2024. The show, which originally committed to releasing a new season every year after the success of the first in 2017, has experienced multiple delays throughout its creation – brought on first by the pandemic (which created a two-year gap between seasons three and four) and then strike action.

It was initially hoped that we’d see season six by the end of 2023, but it’s now more solidly believed that the show will air in 2024 instead. There are no official release dates as of yet, so keep checking back here for updates.

What’s It About?

Without diving too deeply into plot details or spoilers, The Handmaid’s Tale depicts a dystopian future following a second American Civil War. Here, a totalitarian ruling authority called Gilead forces fertile women – known as ‘Handmaids’ – into child-bearing slavery, as a sexually transmitted disease and environmental pollution has all but destroyed fertility rates.

The series closely follows June Osborne, a Handmaid who wants to be reunited with her husband and daughter from ‘the time before’, as she navigates this new world and tries to escape it.

Is It Based On A Book?

Yes, The Handmaid’s Tale is based on the novel of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, although Atwood’s plot is entirely covered by the end of season one. Originally released in 1985, the story has won several awards and has been adapted into a film, an opera and, now, a series.

Atwood didn’t release a sequel to the novel until 2019; it’s called The Testaments, and an adaptation of this is also in the works, intended as a sequel series to The Handmaid’s Tale.

Who Stars?

Much of the core cast as well as series regulars will be making a return in season six, including following:

  • Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne
  • Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford
  • Madeline Brewer as Janine
  • Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia
  • O-T Fagbenle as Luke
  • Max Minghella as Nick
  • Samira Wiley as Moira
  • Bradley Whitford as Commander Lawrence
  • Amanda Brugel as Rita

Longtime fans of the show, however, will be disappointed to learn that Alexis Bledel will not be returning for the final instalment of The Handmaid’s Tale. Her character was written out of the show in season five, and it’s not expected she’ll be returning for the finale.
