Season 2 is coming... and so is season 3

It’s been almost a whole decade since The Night Manager first aired on BBC One in February 2016, quickly growing into one of the 2010s’ landmark shows across the globe. Let’s put that into numbers: 36 award nominations and 11 wins at top ceremonies, including two Primetime Emmy Awards and three Golden Globes – plus a whopping 10 million Brits tuning into the finale in March 2016.

Starring Tom Hiddleston at peak-fame as former British agent Jonathan Pine, the stellar cast included Olivia Colman, Hugh Laurie and Tom Hollander, with the former two set to reprise their roles in the long-awaited return of the drama (RIP Dicky and Corky). First announced in April 2024, the reprisal is all thanks to a new partnership between the BBC and Prime Video, bringing the spy thriller back to our screens for not just one more season, but two.

With fresh pictures from the drama now revealed, here’s everything we know so far.

The Night Manager Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

First, a quick recap. Based on John Le Carré’s 1993 novel of the same name (his first post-Cold War novel), The Night Manager centres on ex-soldier Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston) now working as, you guessed it, the night manager of a luxury hotel. The first series opens in Cairo, where Pine is recruited by Foreign Office task force manager Angela Burr (Olivia Colman) to infiltrate the inner circle of high-profile arms dealer Dicky Roper (Hugh Laurie).

Four years after his mission ends on a tragic note, Pine has relocated to a luxury ski hotel in Zermatt, Switzerland. One day he is tasked with taking care of some late-arriving guests, who turn out to be Dicky and his entourage, including his new mistress Jemima ‘Jed’ Marshall (The Crowns Elizabeth Debicki), whom Pine later becomes entangled with. Pine contacts Burr to provide intelligence stolen from Dicky, but insisting he wants no part in the case. Naturally Burr convinces Pine to help – and thus begins his undercover mission infiltrating Dicky’s circle.

There was a conclusive, explosive ending to the show, so why are we returning to Pine’s world? Series creator David Farr says the decision was not taken lightly, telling the BBC ‘an idea came to me a couple of years ago which felt truthful to that unique world of dark corners and shady identities’. Farr worked closely with Le Carré to create the first series, but the author sadly died in December 2020 and so hasn’t been involved with the return.

‘No one marries the suspense of espionage with a deep exploration of the human soul quite like le Carré,’ Farr says. ‘I hope that in some way we can pay homage to his uneasy genius in this new exploration.’

Hiddleston has called the first series of The Night Manager ‘one of the most creatively fulfilling projects I have ever worked on’: ‘The depth, range and complexity of Jonathan Pine was, and remains, a thrilling prospect,’ he added. So what’s in store for series 2?

What Will Happen In Series 2?

Le Carré didn’t actually write a sequel to The Night Manager – and the BBC has confirmed it is going rogue, creating new drama based on the author’s original characters. Now living as Alex Goodwin, a low-level MI6 officer running a quiet surveillance unit in London, we rejoin Pine eight years after Series 1’s explosive finale. After all of that commotion, Pine’s life is comfortingly uneventful – that is until a chance sighting of an old Roper mercenary brings Pine into contact with a violent new foe: Colombian businessman Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva).

A perilous journey takes Pine to Colombia, where he meets businesswoman Roxana Bolaños (Camila Morrone) who reluctantly helps him infiltrate a new circle: Teddy’s arms operation. Plunging head first back into the shady world of arms dealing, Pine finds himself entangled with the training of a guerilla army and a plot to destabilise a nation.

Take a peek at the action in our first look pictures below.
