The day has come: the highly anticipated second series of Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen hits Netflix today, and it’s safe to say we’ll be binging it. And while we’re keen to see all of our favourite characters come back for another arc of upper class gang operations, it’s the new faces, storylines and settings that have caught our eye this time around. Londoners especially are in for a treat, as the show digs even deeper into the city as the story unfolds. But between Parliamentary campaigns, art heists and scenic drives through the capital, the cast of The Gentlemen do get the chance to (somewhat) unwind with dinner at Marylebone favourite, Carlotta.

How Carlotta Became Part Of The Gentlemen Universe

If you’ve already made it to episode 4 of The Gentlemen season 2, chances are you will have spotted – and loved – the mirror-lined interiors of the restaurant where Eddie, Bella, Susie and Jack find themselves on a double date. The restaurant in question? Carlotta.

Carlotta restaurant

The Italian-American restaurant, which sits pretty on Marylebone High Street, is a retro-inspired trattoria, complete with 80s patterned carpets, curved leather booths, fabric-draped walls and mirrored accents. Lit at all times by a golden glow, it struck a chord with The Gentlemen’s production designer, Martyn John.

‘We were in Marylebone looking for high-end restaurants, and I just loved that place so much,’ John told C&TH in a recent interview. The production designer took the lead on designing episodes 1, 2 and 6 of the new season, but was also in charge of scouting locations for episodes 3, 4 and 5. ‘We didn’t have space for it [in my run of episodes] – we couldn’t put it in anywhere – so it went into the memory banks, and I passed it on to the location manager. And eventually, that’s how it got in. It wasn’t in my episode, but it’s one of those “this is our world” moments. It was amazing.’

Even if audiences don’t immediately recognise Carlotta from its gold-lit dining room, they’ll surely know the eatery by its viral red bathroom. In The Gentlemen, Susie and Bella take a break from the table to have a private conversation backdropped by the restroom’s floor-to-ceiling mirrored walls, glass chandelier and cherry-hued lighting. (All while things continue to get even more tense outside with Eddie and Jack, who are confronted by a group of men from the latter’s past.)

Speaking on Carlotta, John described it as ‘amazing, that place – absolutely amazing’. The restaurant’s high-octane interiors were no doubt a perfect match for the spiralling tension of the episode, and remain a favourite both amongst fans and the team behind the show. ‘One of the fun parts of my job is searching out these locations that you couldn’t build, couldn’t imagine – you don’t have the time or the money – but you can visit them for a couple of hours,’ said John. ‘And it’s such fun going to these beautiful restaurants, bars, and hotels. They’re inspirational. So if you can film it, it’s wonderful.’

The Restaurant

While dinner ends on a sour note for Eddie, Bella, Susie and Jack, real-life diners can expect a much more pleasant experience from Carlotta. The restaurant was opened back in May 2023 by the Big Mamma Group – the name behind London hotspots Jacuzzi, Gloria, Ave Mario and Barbarella – and has since become a local favourite (as well as TikTok hit, thanks to its playful interiors and delicious food).

Carlotta is described as a ‘homage to Italian-American cooking’, specialising in homemade pasta. Presenting a slight twist on Neapolitan and Sicilian classics, standout dishes include penne alla vodka with Cornish crab, lamb arrosticini skewers and a giant 10-tiered chocolate fudge cake. The bar also boasts an impressive list of Italian cocktails and wines, which will no doubt make any experience at Carlotta feel all the merrier.
