Where To Eat In Frome, According To A Local

From street food stalls to farmers markets

The charming town of Frome, located in Somerset, is known for its warm community spirit and thriving arts scene – but it’s also a hotspot for foodies. You won’t find any big chains here: the neighbourhood is filled with independent eateries, cafes and shops, which all celebrate the bountiful natural larder of the South West countryside. It’s the perfect place for a British staycation, and we’ve enlisted long-time local Amy Macfadyen to share a foodie’s guide to the area. Along with her husband Owen, Amy runs one of the town’s most popular spots, RYE Bakery, which has two parts: a cafe serving pastries and coffee, and a pizzeria and wine bar.

Best Food Spots In Frome: Amy’s Pick

‘Being born and raised in Frome a lot has changed over the years when it comes to places to eat and drink, says Amy. ‘We are very lucky to live in a small town with such an amazing food offering. We have so many great independent growers, farmers and food producers who share our ethos, so we like to keep it local where possible.’

Lunches

‘Our favourite thing to do on a Saturday morning is head to the back of At the Station, where our bakery is located, for an early lunch with some of our favourite independent food vendors.

JJ’s Doubles

Justin makes a Trinidadian street food called Doubles, a chickpea curry lovingly wrapped in delicious fried rotis (there are two of them, hence ‘Doubles’), served with tamarind and Justin’s famous chilli sauce. Warning: if you say you like it hot… good luck!

Owen’s Sausages and Ham

My son usually goes for a hot dog from our friend Owen, who runs Owen’s Sausages & Hams, also at the back of At The Station, along with Owen’s special chips – the best in Frome!

Lungi Babas

If you’re quick you might be lucky enough to try a samosa or two from Mahesh’s shipping container, 11 Chillies Express, in front of our bakery. We provide the flour for Mahesh from our in house mill so this is a great example of the collaboration you will see At The Station.

Dinners

Coop Kitchen

A perfect Tuesday night lazy dinner with friends and family is a takeaway burger from Coop Kitchen, at the Ship. We make a salad to have on the side to make us feel less naughty!

High Pavement

The High Pavement is my go-to for a special occasion, their sharing plates are filled with flavour. Do try and get a table their secret garden, it is such a special place tucked in the heart of Frome.

Shopping

Somerset Farmers Market

On the second Saturday of the month we have Somerset Farmers Market, bringing together the best of local growers and producers. We use this market to stock up the freezer with great meat or get some locally produced treats.

Vallis Veg

We have some amazing local growers such as Vallis Veg who offer a weekly veg box delivery, direct to your door, on their electric trike (the trike is also built in Frome).

The Cheese Lord

Martin is my go to cheesemonger, tailoring to every occasion from which cheese is best taken on a long journey for a sandwich, to creating a cheese board for a party. Martin is also the Frome Town Crier and generally a fantastic human.

BOF at Baker Street

We’ve been regulars at this newly opened butcher this summer, which has been excellent for special cuts of meats for a summer barbecue on the patio.

Giving Back

It’s really important to me that our business supports our local community and I try to support initiatives that put something back. We have a pay what you can community restaurant, Canteen which has a pop up restaurant in a local church and park.

We also have a community compost scheme that collects food waste from local businesses and turns it into compost. I planted all our greenhouse veg in Loop compost this year. There is also a food bank and community pantry for those who need it, run by Fair Frome and our business also offers Too Good To Go bags where you can pick up food that would otherwise go to waste.’
