What does the Princess of Wales eat in a day? It’s only natural to be curious about the dietary habits of our future Queen. Yet while it’s easy to think British royalty enjoy lavish feasts of caviar and lobster every day, Kate Middleton is refreshingly normal when it comes to her food choices. Over the years, the royal has given us nuggets of information about her favourite things to eat – and it turns out in many ways she’s just like us, opting for a balanced diet which features a mix of British staples, nutritious fare and sweet treats.
Kate Middleton’s Favourite Foods: 6 Dishes Loved By The Royal
Curries
The Princess of Wales’ takeaway of choice? An Indian. During an appearance on BBC Radio 1 in 2017, Kate and Prince William revealed they love to settle down to a box set with a curry. When DJ Scott Mills asked if they were ‘allowed’ to order a takeaway to Kensington Palace, Kate replied, ‘absolutely’, before adding that it would be ‘curry, definitely.’ The royal also said that she’s partial to spicy food – although William is ‘not so good’ with it. On another occasion, the pair spoke about their love for curries during a trip to the Indian Streatery restaurant in Birmingham, telling the team they ‘secretly try lots of curry houses around the country’.

Watermelon Salad
Every time there’s a heatwave, social media fills up with videos of watermelon and feta salads – and for good reason: it’s one of the most refreshing dishes out there. Kate is a fan too, according to sources from Kensington Palace, who say the Princess of Wales has long favoured the summertime dish. Meanwhile, a nutrition expert from wellness platform Barbend told The Express: ‘Watermelon salads are a staple of Kate’s lunches, and include juicy pink watermelon mixed with avocado, onion, cucumber, and feta cheese – the perfect mix of sweet and savoury.’ Keen to make your own? We’ve nabbed a recipe here.
Green Breakfast Smoothies
Multiple sources have reported Kate likes to start her day with a breakfast smoothie, featuring ingredients like kale, spirulina, matcha and spinach. Former royal nutritionist Jennifer Hanway, who worked with Kate in the past, appeared to confirm this in an interview with Hello, saying, ‘Kate has a ton of antioxidants in there, a ton of vitamins and minerals, and a ton of fibre – which make for a powerhouse of overall health. Everything from the kale to the leafy greens is a really great source of nutrients.’
Kate has managed to get her children, George, Charlotte and Louis, to love vegetables too. Speaking to The Great British Bake Off’s Mary Berry during a BBC Christmas special, the Princess said: ‘We’ve got carrots, beans, beetroot – a massive favourite – Louis absolutely loves beetroot.’

Sushi
Back in 2018, the Prince of Wales attended the opening of Japan House in London, a culture centre spanning Japanese, art, design and food. As part of his visit, he tried dishes from the on-site restaurant, Akira – specifically, a bento box of sushi. This prompted him to tell executive chef Akira Shimizu that he and Kate ‘love sushi’, adding, ‘we might have to come down here for lunch when no one else is in.’
Roast Chicken
Kate has spoken numerous times about her love for cooking, and it sounds like roast chicken is a family favourite. In 2016, E! Reported that ‘Kate would go to the supermarket and make William roast chicken dinner for when he got home from work’, while in 2012 Vanity Fair’s Katie Nicholl reported: ‘In the evenings, [Kate] indulges her hobby of cooking William’s favorite supper, roast chicken.’

Sticky Toffee Pudding
When it comes to dessert, Kate keeps it classic with a sticky toffee pudding. Former royal chef Darren McGrady told Delish: ‘Although I have never actually cooked for the Duchess of Cambridge, I know that sticky toffee pudding was one of her favourites.’ The Princess allegedly often ordered it during visits to The Old Boot Inn in Stanford Dingley, where she has dined on multiple occasions. Chef consultant Rody Warot, who worked there in the past, said to People: ‘Kate is always discreet and has always complimented the dishes with great kindness. Her favourite [dishes] are the pate on toasted brioche or the roast figs on Parma ham with spicy apple chutney, followed by the tiger prawn and wild mushroom linguine. And for the [dessert], her favourite is sticky toffee pudding. It’s moist and spongy.’
