Since he became the monarch in 2022, we’ve learnt more and more about the culinary habits of King Charles – from his penchant for avocados to a love for veg-forward dishes. And now he has shared his unexpected go-to snack: sheep’s cheese served on digestive biscuits.
The King’s Snack Of Choice? Sheep’s Cheese On A Digestive Biscuit
The King revealed his love for the cheese and biscuit combination during a visit to Lancashire this week. He met with local businesses, divulging his snack of choice to Gillian Hale from Butlers’ Farmhouse Cheeses, who said afterwards: ‘We’re going to send some to him later in a goody bag. He was so gracious.’
The trip marked the first time the King – who is also The Duke of Lancaster – visited the region since being crowned. Crowds gathered and cheered as he was handed the keys to the historic Lancaster Castle in front of the John O’Gaunt gateway, an ancient ceremonial tradition dating back to 1851, when the keys were first presented to Queen Victoria.
Alongside the aforementioned cheesemonger, he met representatives from Northern Yarn, an independent wool shop, who gave him a tie and some gloves for the Queen. According to business owner Kate Makin, the King was particularly interested in their regenerative farming principles.
The King also chatted to 101-year-old war veteran Richard Brock, who he remembered from a previous visit to Normandy for the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. After asking about Brock’s age, he told him ‘you are fantastic’, adding ‘keep drinking the whisky’.

Charles’ interest in local produce was highlighted by Queen Camilla’s son Tom Parker Bowles in his latest book, Cooking & The Crown. Here, Bowles describes King Charles as ‘a true food hero’, adding: ‘there is no man who knows more about food and farming, from the best of British cheeses, through rare breeds of sheep and cow, to heritage varieties of plum, apple and pear, than the King.’
The monarch apparently favours a homegrown diet that’s rich in vegetables and eggs from his chickens at Highgrove House. Famously, he doesn’t usually eat lunch – as revealed in a list of 70 facts released for his 70th birthday (when he was Prince Charles), often preferring afternoon tea at around 5pm.
He’s not vegetarian, but limits his meat intake in order to reduce his carbon footprint. In 2021, the royal told the BBC: ‘For years I haven’t eaten meat and fish on two days a week and I don’t eat dairy products on one day a week.’ Instead, he’ll enjoy plant-based meals like mushroom risotto, according to former royal chef Darren McGrady – a dish he was inspired to try after foraging for wild mushrooms at Balmoral. ‘It’s no secret that King Charles III loves Italian food, and these dried wild mushrooms make the perfect risotto,’ said McGrady.
