The Royal Hotel, Ventnor, Isle of Wight

Traditional (it was built in 1832) with a modern twist, The Royal is a handsome, three-storey building fronted by a pretty wrought-iron veranda that overlooks Ventnor’s Esplanade and the English Channel. The Royal is in peak condition, its elegant rooms painted in muted colours with new furnishings and a slick bar area. Stunning framed black and white photographs of the Isle of Wight add interest throughout the hotel, and the oriental touches in the corridors are charming and unusual. In the grand dining room, hung with portraits and chandeliers, the food is a happy mix of old favourites and more modern fare, and you can also eat in the stylish brasserie, colonial conservatory or relaxed bar.

Visit Ventnor Botanic Garden. Their subtropical and exotic plant collection is unrivalled, and the garden is an immersive landscape, transporting the visitor to experience Mediterranean regions from around the world. The best way to explore and appreciate the garden is to join in for their guided walk, which falls on every first Wednesday of the month at 12pm, led by curator, Chris Kidd.


Dining at The Royal restaurant will be a highlight of your stay. The Royal Hotel has achieved 2 AA Rosettes for excellent food for over 20(replacing 18) consecutive years and has appeared in every Michelin Good Food Guide since its inception.


The Royal Kitchen Experience (not available in the summer), and enjoy a fun filled experience whilst gaining an insight into the inner workings of an award-winning restaurant at The Royal’s Kitchen. It also makes an ideal present for Birthdays, Anniversaries, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day and of course, Christmas.


Afternoon refreshments at the hotel were a favourite of Queen Victoria when she visited Ventnor. So a full tea, taken in the brasserie or conservatory, has been a sacrosanct tradition at The Royal ever since.
