All the homegrown talent to know

South Korean musical Maybe Happy Ending was the big winner at the 78th Tony Awards last night, scooping up six prizes almost a decade after it debuted in Seoul. The production starred Helen J Shen and Darren Criss in the leading roles, with the latter beating former Glee co-star Jonathan Groff to bag the Best Actor in a Musical Tony. It’s a big win for South Korea, which has cemented its status as a global cultural powerhouse in the 21st century, infiltrating the Emmys with Squid Game and the Oscars with Parasite in recent years.

The Tony Awards are the American equivalent of the British Olivier Awards: the top prizes to recognise achievements on Broadway over the past year. Of course, here in the UK, our stage talent is world class, and the 2025 Tony Awards were even hosted by Brit Cynthia Erivo. So how did British talent fare at the 2025 awards?

Did Any Brits Win A Tony Award In 2025?

After success at the Olivier Awards last year, legendary English composer Andrew Lloyd Webber returned to sweep the Tony Awards last night: Sunset Boulevard bagged Best Revival of a Musical, with lead star Nicole Scherzinger repeating her Olivier success and winning Best Actress in a Musical. In an emotional speech, Scherzinger called working with Lloyd Webber an ‘honour’, and thanked the show’s British director Jamie Lloyd (who lost his Best Direction of a Musical prize to Michael Arden for Maybe Happy Ending) for seeing something in her ‘no one else did’. ‘You have given us all new ways to dream and you have changed my life forever,’ she said. Co-star and English actor Tom Francis was also nominated for Best Leading Actor in a Musical, but missed out to Darren Criss for Maybe Happy Ending.

Elsewhere, though British writing troupe SplitLip’s two-time Olivier Award winning musical Operation Mincemeat just missed out on Best Musical, British stage star Jak Malone went home with a trophy: Best Featured Actor in a Musical (the US equivalent of ‘Supporting Actor’).

British play The Hills of California (ironically set in Blackpool, written by Jez Butterworth and directed by Sam Mendes) was nominated for three prizes but sadly didn’t win any. Further honorary mentions include Northern Irish stars Louis McCartney (who was nominated for Best Leading Actor for the Broadway transfer of Stranger Things: The First Shadow) and Laura Donnelly (who received a Best Leading Actress nomination for The Hills of California).

Further success foreshadowed at the Olivier Awards includes Sarah Snook’s Best Actress prize for her performance in Kip Williams’ one-actor-26-roles adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.
