We’re Loving Duravit’s Latest Bathroom Trend
Geometry with soul? Perhaps an unconvincing concept for the many whose minds are currently conjuring up painful memories of maths classes which left their souls feeling somewhat more crushed than elated. And yet, in its latest bathroom design, Duravit seems to have made the impossible possible by putting the fun back into shapes with the new Balcoon collection.

What Does Balcoon Mean?
So what is geometry with soul? This latest bathroom trend is all about strange shapes and eye-catching levels deisgned to add a sense of dimension, texture and intrigue to your home. As Patricia Urquiola, the designer of Duravit’s latest Balcoon collection describes: ‘The design plays with differences in height, projections and the overlapping of materials and textures, from which the name “Balcoon” is derived.’ While Balcoon itself is not a real word, it perfectly conjures up images of balloon-y shapes intersecting and overlapping like a balcony. Following on from this theme, the Balcoon bathroom range is a fascinating combination of modernity and timeless elegance which manages to remain minimalist while retaining a strong design identity.
How To Get The Look
The objects in the range pair simple geometric forms with clear lines, creating a pared-down, sleek aesthetic. The above-counter basins, for example – such as the Balcoon Console – create a sculptural focal point in the room. By placing round and oval washbasins on a a juxtaposingly square plinth, this interplay of geometric shapes adds intrigue to the space. Playing with different levels in this way is a constant across the entire collection – from the vanity wall-mounted washbasins through to the raised toilets and bidets.
This contrast in shape can be best seen in Duravit’s Balcoon bathtubs, combining the right-angled (and easy to clean!) cuboid exterior with a curved oval interior, ergonomically shaped for a long and relaxing soak in the tub. With the interior element of the bath peeking out over the edge, this subtle contrast in levels turns an otherwise simple bathtub into a visually striking feature.
Matching faucets (such as the Balcoon single lever basin mixer) for the washing area, bidet, shower and bathtub complete Duravit’s exciting new range. The cylindrical handle of the faucets transitions into the main body in a gentle curve, making it particularly pleasant to hold. For those of you with sustainability on the mind, Duravit’s Balcoon faucets also offer resource-saving functions in the form of ‘Fresh Start’ and ‘Minus Flow’ that save energy and water.
With ribbed furnite fronts and a sophisticated terazzo look, the Balcoon Colllection celebrates shape, pattern and texture, particularly the Balcoon Cabinets. The mineral consoles available in three colour options are another way of adding more depth and authenticity to the furniture, while pairing the geometric shapes with textured patterns creates playful accents. The Balcoon Console, with its integrated rear panel is one of the most striking details of the range, creating a special spatial dimension. The console is overlaid with the fronts of the storage solutions beneath, which Patricia Urquiola designed as an unusual, partly asymmetric arrangement of drawers and open shelves.
The Colour Palette
The visual tension of the furniture is further reinforced by the combination of contrasting colours. Drawing your attention to the striking geometric shapes, Urquiola takes a step back with the colour palette by using an earthy terracotta range of shades that bring the tacticle and material qualities to the fore. ‘Clay Terra Matt is the central colour of the new collection. A shade that makes the ceramics look more authentic and handmade,’ says Urquiloa.
