How To Design An Outdoor Dining Space, According To The Experts
When summer arrives, your garden really does become the ‘fifth room’: a valuable extension of your home, and a space that’s absolutely worthy of a few stellar design features. But once you’ve tended to the plant pots and dusted off the outdoor furniture, how do you take your garden to the next level – and really nail alfresco entertaining? We asked Alex Bridgman, CEO of the eponymous garden furniture brand, for his top tips.

Make The Most Of What You Have
Before you splash out on a lavish furniture set or even plan a full garden redesign, think about how you can work with what you already have.
‘When designing an outdoor dining area, start by utilising existing features in your garden,’ Alex advises. ‘Pergolas, for example, can be transformed into an elegant setting with the addition of soft lighting and an abundance of greenery, while paved areas or patios offer the perfect foundation for a stylish seating area.’
Even larger architectural features can provide the perfect backdrop. ‘Don’t forget about archways, stone walls, or statement planting like hedges,’ Alex adds. ‘These can help to frame your dining area without the need for a complete redesign.’
Plan Your Positioning
‘The location of your outdoor dining area is essential,’ says Alex. ‘Choose a spot with plenty of sunlight, ideal for basking in the sun or enjoying a long lunch with friends.’
While you might want to choose somewhere you can sunbathe, shade is also a crucial consideration. ‘If natural shade is limited, opt for a parasol to offer yourself and guests protection from the sun; it will also help to offer shelter from any unexpected gusts of wind too,’ Alex suggests. ‘Whether you choose a parasol slotted into your table or a sturdy, cantilever design that can be easily re-positioned as the sun moves around the garden, these features will add comfort and enhance the alfresco experience.’

Invest In Long-Lasting Pieces
‘Investing in weatherproof furniture is one of the best things you can do for your garden,’ says Alex. ‘Opt for materials like powder-coated aluminium, teak or synthetic rattan, all of which can withstand the elements. This will ensure that your outdoor dining scheme will last for many years to come – not just the upcoming season.’
Don’t Forget To Accessorise
‘Finishing touches help to bring a scheme to life,’ Alex explains. ‘Start by layering tactile textures with waterproof cushions and weather-resistant rugs to create a dining space that feels cosy and inviting. Next, add solar lighting, setting the mood and offering many practical benefits without the need for excess wires. Lanterns and candles will help to complete the look, making your garden feel like a true extension of your home.’
