Prepare for a big summer clearout
If the infamous spring clean feels a little overdue, there’s no need to panic: summer is the perfect time to get your home reorganised and, of course, clutter free. Sound like an impossible task? Here’s how to get stuck into a summer reset.
How To Nail The Summer Reset: A Decluttering Guide
Use The One-Year Rule
Naturally, a summer reset starts with packing away seasonal gear like heavy coats, chunky knitwear and thick blankets – but it’s also the perfect time to assess whether you actually make use of these.
‘If you haven’t used or worn something in the past year – especially seasonal items – it’s a strong candidate for storage or donation,’ advises storage expert Max Wilson, co-founder of Pocket Storage. ‘This is particularly true for winter clothing that won’t see the light of day for months.’
Target High-Traffic Zones First
If switching out your entire wardrobe is a daunting prospect, try to tackle smaller areas in the kitchen and living room instead.
‘Focus on areas that get the most use: living rooms, hallways, and kitchen countertops,’ says Max. ‘These are often prime spots for accumulating miscellaneous items. Clearing these zones first provides an immediate sense of accomplishment and visual relief, motivating you for bigger tasks.’
Categorise Before You Store
The real key to getting organised for the season ahead? A foolproof storage system.
‘Before you pack anything away, group similar items,’ says Max. ‘Using clear bins or labelling boxes is crucial. This makes the decluttering process more efficient and ensures easy retrieval later.’
Try Some Simple Swaps
The summer reset isn’t just about decluttering; it’s also a chance to refresh your space – and according to Max, soft furnishings are your secret weapon.
‘Transforming the feel of your home for summer can be as simple as changing your textiles,’ he explains. ‘Pack away heavy throws and plush velvet cushions that provide warmth in winter; in their place, bring out lighter, breathable fabrics like linen and cotton.’
If you really want to free up your storage space (and ensure your cosy blankets remain in perfect condition), he suggests keeping winter items in a ‘climate-controlled storage facility to keep them fresh, dust-free, and perfectly ready for next season.’
Optimise Hallways And Entertaining Areas
‘Entryways and living rooms serve as the first impression of your home – but they can quickly become dumping grounds,’ Max reflects. ‘For summer, it’s time to refresh them and clear out excess shoes, coats, and accessories that accumulate near the door. This simple act creates a welcoming, open feel that’s perfect for summer entertaining and makes everyday living much more pleasant.’
Reimagine Your Space
Winter might create the urge to hibernate, but the warmer weather is all about opening your home to guests and, of course, bringing the sunshine inside. So why not shake things up a bit?
‘Once clutter is removed, you can truly redecorate and rearrange,’ says Max. ‘Consider moving furniture to create better flow for entertaining guests, or designate new areas for relaxation and summer activities.’
Traditionally cosy spaces can also be reimagined for the months ahead: ‘Think a reading nook bathed in sunlight or a dedicated space for indoor plants,’ Max suggests. ‘Your home should adapt to your lifestyle, and freeing up space is the first step to making that happen. Summer is all about light, ease, and connection, so give your home the breathing room it needs to welcome in the season.’
