Glastonbury – now in its 55th year – is a legendary festival.

Since 1970, it has hosted performances by renowned artists such as Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Kylie Minogue and Adele.

But it is also well-known for the opportunities it offers emerging talent. Across campsites and stages, audiences get the chance to discover a wide variety of up-and-coming performers.

Such is the truth this year, as Stonyhurst College pupil Bergie had the experience of a lifetime giving a VIP performance on the opening night of this year’s festival.

Year nine pupil Bergie, a music scholar, was discovered by the founder of Camp Kerela, a luxury camping experience at Glastonbury.

While on a ski holiday in France, Bergie caught Jennifer Oldland’s attention by playing one of her favourite pieces – Einaudi’s Experience – on a hotel piano.

Oldland immediately invited Bergie to perform at Camp Kerela’s exclusive VIP opening night at Glastonbury.

Introduced to the crowd as ‘an amazing young man with the brightest of futures ahead’, Bergie played a 20-minute set – including Experience, which started this amazing journey.

‘Playing at Glastonbury was truly amazing,’ Bergie reflects. ‘My face is sore from smiling so much.’

Stonyhurst’s assistant director of music, Andrew Haynes, says: ‘I am absolutely thrilled for Bergie.

‘What an extraordinary opportunity. It’s not every day a 14 year old is spotted playing in a hotel foyer and ends up performing at a Glastonbury event.

‘We’re all incredibly proud.’
