The Curriculum
A deliberately small school offering big opportunities, Heathfield prides itself on giving every student the diverse opportunities to discover their unique passions and talents and, accordingly, to develop the self-belief and confidence to succeed. Our small class sizes and 4:1 student/teacher ratio, ensures that each student receives the best possible attention.
In 2024, students surpassed their predicted GCSE grades by a wide margin, with a value added score of 1.32 higher than the predicted grades in each subject. This was reflected in great results across the board, including 30% of all grades awarded at 9 or 8, and half of all grades awarded at 9-7.
Games & The Arts
Whilst our small class sizes ensure all students receive engaging teaching and individual attention, our teaching and learning don’t just take place in the classroom. Students here discover they have abilities and passions in areas previously unexplored. Our wide and diverse range of co-curricular subjects and activities evolve every year to accommodate new trends and interests. This ‘have a go’ attitude is infectious and filters down from the upper year groups, which means that girls have the confidence to take risks. Heathfield is a safe place to try new things. Students learn where their strengths and challenges lay and are enabled to improve on both.
Every girl in Forms I and II represents the school in athletics, lacrosse, netball, rounders, swimming and tennis. In Forms III and IV there are A and B teams in most sports and at senior level, 1st and 2nd teams. All teams play competitive matches at fixtures throughout the school year. As well as running teams and clubs in all major sports, Heathfield also offers students the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities including badminton, cricket, dance, fitness, football, gymnastics, polo, riding and trampolining. These are open to all ages and abilities and are an excellent opportunity for older girls to mentor and mix with the younger years. In addition, there is a strong inter-House structure with every student representing their House in both team and individual sports.
Well-known for its prowess in the Arts, Heathfield students enjoy participating in a wide range of Drama and Musical events from whole school productions to live concerts at school and at local venues. Heathfield Art students benefit from our unique Collaboration Agreement with Parsons Paris, our Creative Partnership with Falmouth School of Art and from the close relationship with the world-famous London College of Fashion – Heathfield’s biennial Fashion Show is now legendary. In addition, the Art Department have collaborated with Course Leaders on the BA Fine Art and BA Drawing courses to enhance and extend current provision for our students.
Pastoral Care
Students have a strong and supportive network at Heathfield. Everyone is part of the House system with every student going into one of four Houses. The Heads of House are responsible for students’ welfare and are the main point of contact for parents. Students also have an allocated Housemistress in the boarding area who is on duty before and after the school day and on weekends, who can be also contacted by parents.
Offering day, part time, weekly and full boarding in a 24/7 boarding environment gives students and families the ultimate in flexibility. Day girls play a full part in the life of Heathfield alongside our boarders. We offer flexible days to suit family life; whether day girls want to come to school for breakfast or for the beginning of school, leave after lessons or stay on for an evening or weekend activity they are involved in.
We run busy daily local and London bus services and these are extended each year to accommodate new routes for our new students. Students are totally immersed in Heathfield’s warm and close knit community, a place where they create fantastic memories and make friends for life.
University Places
In 2024, over 40 per cent of our cohort secured their preferred places at Russell Group universities including Bristol, Durham, Birmingham, Exeter, King’s College, London, Royal Holloway, Surrey and the Royal Veterinary College in the UK, and international universities in Greece and Monaco and at Vermont University in the US. Students were also awarded places at other top destinations including London College of Fashion, Glasgow School of Art and Parsons, Paris. The courses chosen reflect the diverse interests of our students and in 2024 ranged from Economics, Law, Medicine and Biomedical Engineering to Anthropology, Digital Media, Drama Theatre & Acting and Fine Art.
In the past five years, over 96 percent of Heathfield old girls graduating, attained either a First Class or 2:1 degree.
Head Teacher’s Philosophy
Heathfield is focused on empowering students by encouraging exploration, creativity, curiosity and critical thinking to drive independence and to give students the room to be themselves and develop the skills to enable them to thrive. We create a sense of belonging by maintaining our close-knit community, a home from home, where happiness and achievement go hand in hand. Academically, Heathfield aims to engender an intellectual curiosity combined with self-discipline; a combination that leads our young women to success in so many areas.
