Time to rebalance

Every September, we wave goodbye to summer and welcome the season of crunchy leaves and pumpkin spice lattes with the autumn equinox. This day marks the halfway point between summer and winter – the precise moment when the sun sits directly over Earth’s equator and daytime and nighttime are of equal length. The specific date varies every year, but this year the autumn equinox will fall on 22 September. So do we need to do anything to prepare – emotionally or spiritually?

What Is The Autumn Equinox?

In the simplest of terms, the autumn equinox marks the beginning of autumn, and the midpoint between summer and winter – but it is also imbued with spiritual significance. For everyone, it’s a reminder to recalibrate and find harmony within – to purge anything that sets you off balance and reflect on the things you would like to change in the near future.

‘This year, on September 22, 2025, the equinox occurs as the sun aligns perfectly over the equator, creating a balance of day and night,’ explains Iva Naskova, a psychic at spiritual guidance platform Nebula. ‘It marks the transition from Virgo’s practicality to Libra’s charm, nudging us towards harmony and tranquillity.

‘Astrologically, the fall equinox serves as nature’s nudge to pause and reset,’ she continues. ‘It’s a reminder that change is inevitable, letting go can be beautiful, and self-care is crucial. Just as trees shed their leaves, we’re prompted to release what no longer serves us, preparing for renewal. This year’s equinox is especially potent, coinciding with a solar eclipse and New Moon in Virgo on 21 September, encouraging us to set new intentions and embrace new beginnings.

‘And as we step into Libra season, the focus changes to nurturing relationships and seeking balance. Libra guides us to find joy in connections and smooth out life’s rough patches, helping us cultivate a sense of peace and harmony.’

But how can we prepare for the change? Psychic and astrologer Inbaal Honigan from Psychic World recommends: ‘As you get ready for the equinox, take a few moments to jot down the best and worst of your summer, and your biggest hopes and fears for winter. Light a candle to banish the worries and invite positivity.’

So what does the autumn equinox mean for each star sign in particular? Below, Iva explains what each astrological sign can expect.

‘This equinox is all about finding equilibrium and establishing solid routines to help you achieve your ambitions. Prioritising self-care and indulgence is key; you’ll enjoy exercising, meditating, and watching your confidence grow each time you pass a mirror.’

Iva’s Psychic Tip: This is not the time to be stubborn or cling to familiar patterns. Instead, embrace change, step out of your comfort zone, and create a healthy, balanced schedule.

Gemini (21 May–20 June)

‘The equinox stirs your playful, sociable side. You’ll thrive by engaging with others, conversing, and meeting fresh faces. Now is the ideal time to heal a wounded heart and recognise the abundant love potential that awaits you.’

Iva’s Psychic Tip: Your mind is racing, but clarity is missing. Pause to reflect on past lessons so you can make the best choices for your future goals.

Cancer (21 June–22 July)

‘During the equinox, your attention turns to family and home. You’ll find joy in environments that comfort your emotional health. It’s also a wonderful period to embrace your creative side – direct your energy into crafting your own masterpieces.’

‘The equinox centres on your long-term aspirations and financial development. You’ll be driven to upgrade and better yourself, whether by acquiring new abilities or investing in personal growth. This might be your most rewarding self-investment for a flourishing future.’

Iva’s Psychic Tip: Being hard on yourself is not the way to navigate this equinox. Honour your growth, forgive past mistakes, and set bold intentions for the future.

Libra (23 September–22 October)

‘Happy beginnings, Libra! The equinox heralds your time to shine. Fortune, joy, and upliftment are all on your horizon. You’ll feel self-assured, magnetic, and ready to conquer any challenge. The New Moon amplifies your ambitions – heed what you visualise now, for it holds great power.’

Scorpio (23 October–21 November)

‘The equinox stirs your realm of dreams and ambitions, prompting a desire for solitude. While Libra season promotes connection, striking a healthy balance between “me time” and social interaction will rejuvenate and refresh you.’

Iva’s Psychic Tip: It’s time for the old version of you to stay in the past. Use this powerful spiritual energy to rise above limitations and lean on your inner strength to move forward.

Sagittarius (22 November–21 December)

Capricorn (22 December–19 January)

‘This equinox focuses on your career, spotlighting your 10th house of achievement. Expect heightened clarity about your professional aspirations, along with deserved appreciation of your efforts. This season is evidence of your hard work paying off.’

Iva’s Psychic Tip: Hard work has always been your way through obstacles, but this time you need to ease the pressure on yourself. Life is more than just work and money.

Aquarius (20 January–18 February)

‘Adventure beckons! This equinox nudges you to grab your passport, book that getaway, or dive into new learning opportunities. Libra season inspires you to think big, expand your vistas, and invest in acquiring knowledge and skills to mould your future.’

Iva’s Psychic Tip: Your vision is expanding, but clarity comes only when you pause. Create structure in your plans so you know they will carry through.

Pisces (19 February–20 March)

‘Boundaries take centre stage at this equinox. Your focus changes to intimacy, shared finances, and personal wealth. It’s time to stand up for yourself and prevent others from overstepping. Meanwhile, the New Moon offers a new beginning in love – so open your heart while remaining firm.’

Iva’s Psychic Tip: Your energy is your superpower, so don’t let others drain it. Avoid energy vampires and protect your space to navigate the equinox with ease.

How To Celebrate The Autumn Equinox

If you are looking for more generic advice as we usher in the new season, classic autumn equinox activities include:

  • Sunrise yoga – greeting the balanced day and night with inner balance and asana alignment
  • Reflection, from journaling retrospectively to carving out your goals for the season ahead
  • Foraging and feasting on the fruits of mother nature – this is harvest season, after all
  • Campfire, drawing on the Pagan autumn equinox celebration, Mabon, which balances light and dark with fire ceremonies

Do The Clocks Change On The Autumn Equinox?

No, daylight savings does not coincide with the autumn equinox. In the UK, the clocks go back by one hour on the final Sunday of October, signalling the end of British Summer Time (BST) and a switch back to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). This year, the clocks will go back on Sunday 26 October at 2am.
