Daniel invites us to walk a mile in his shoes

While taking on the role of creative director from another designer can leave you with some pretty big shoes to fill, it’s a whole new ballgame when you have to start from scratch – but nothing that Russell & Bromley’s new design lead, Daniel Beardsworth-Shaw, can’t handle. ‘It’s all go,’ he tells C&TH. ‘We’re in the midst of planning Russell & Bromley’s AW25 season roll out, which will be my first collection for the brand, so I’m super excited for it to all come to fruition and be out there for our customers to enjoy.’

The collection drops this September – but while we wait, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to get to know Russell & Bromley’s first ever creative director (through the lens of fashion, of course). Below, Daniel Beardsworth-Shaw shares the items, moments and mantras that have shaped his personal style.

Daniel Beardsworth-Shaw’s Style Rules

Hi Daniel, thanks for joining us today. How are things going?

Great, thanks! We’re in the midst of planning Russell & Bromley’s AW25 season roll out, which will be my first collection for the brand, so I’m super excited for it to all come to fruition and be out there for our customers to enjoy. I’m particularly looking forward to the launch of our campaign in early September – it’s all go.

How would you describe your personal style?

Ever changing, ever evolving. I dress how I want to dress and for myself only.

And your approach to fashion?

I’d say I have a constantly changing approach – sometimes I am more formal and sometimes more casual. I don’t put together outfits that people would necessarily think go together.

What does your daily uniform look like?

I have a rotation of statement shirts, t-shirts and tailored wide leg trousers – or a barrel trouser – that I’ll usually switch for tailored shorts in the warmer months (and which I’ve often made myself in my at-home studio). And, of course, always a pair of Russell & Bromley shoes. At the moment I’m wearing a lot of our sandals with socks.

Do you have a style crush?

Miuccia Prada and Raf Simmons always. As for right now, I think Nicholas Hoult on his Superman press tour is looking great.

Which labels do you always come back to?

JW Anderson and Burberry.

And are there any under-the-radar brands you think we should know about?

Drole de Monsieur is my latest find – it’s a great French brand with a really cool, fun style. I got some great faux croc brown leather shorts from there when I went to Paris. It does nice street wear, but with a formal twist. I like the juxtaposition.

Is there an item you can’t leave the house without?

Sweets, water (a must!) and Smints. Oh, and a Carmex.

What are your staples for summer?

Shorts, cowboy boots and a shirt.

What three essentials would you take with you on a weekend getaway?

A good holdall, face moisturiser and a nice shirt.

What are your top preloved and rental fashion haunts?

MyTheresa and The Outnet for online, and Selfridges instore. I flick between big houses like Loewe and Jacquemus too. There aren’t many rentals for men, which is very annoying – a gap in the market, for sure.

Tell us about a style habit of yours?

The fact that I always tuck my shirt in!

And a moment from fashion history you love?

Club Kids, especially how it has been referenced across the fashion scene since the 80s. It’s interesting to see how that quite short-lived movement has influenced our scene today – Rick Owens’ SS16 show, for example, was inspired by performer Leigh Bowery. CK always lives on in everything we do.

What’s your ultimate fashion hotspot recommendation?

It’s really great to see Redchuch Street making a comeback. That area feels exciting again, it’s coming back to life.

How do you see your style evolving in 10 years’ time?

It will change massively – especially if I think about what I wore 10 years ago compared to today. I still do have clothes from the last decade that I mix into my current wardrobe. I see my style continuing to evolve and absorb the fashion that is yet to come – which is an exciting thought.

Any projects you’re working on?

I have a studio at home where I make my own clothes – I love to whip up trousers or a pair of shorts. I am currently working on a bomber jacket from a kantha quilt that I got on one of my trips to India.

Not To Be Nosy, But…

What’s inside your bag?

Smints, sweets, water, headphones, a notebook and a Muji pen for when inspiration hits.

What’s the most expensive piece in your wardrobe?

A Dior saddle bag.

And the most sentimental?

My wedding suit.

What about the oldest?

A vintage Pierre Cardin top from 1975 that I thrifted and have had for many years now.

A trend you love?

Grandpacore – which our Tunstall loafer fits perfectly into, hence why I can’t stop wearing them at the moment.

A trend you hate?

Skinny jeans…

A fashion faux pas you’d never make again?

Green skinny jeans that I had during my student days. Or dungarees. I used to wear a lot of dungarees.

A style rule you live by?

Do it for you, don’t do it for anyone else. Dress how you want to dress.
