How a few sketches over coffee turned into jewellery’s longest-lasting influencer collaboration

When Missoma founder Marisa Hordern and digital creator Lucy Williams first bonded over a shared love of jewellery in 2014, they could not have imagined it would lead to one of the industry’s most successful partnerships. September marks the 10th anniversary of the brand’s longest-standing influencer collaboration, famous for its sell-out pieces and celebrity fans, including Hailey Bieber, Julia Roberts, Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift.

Instantly recognisable is the iconic Roman Arc Coin necklace, which launched in 2017 as part of the Roman collection – inspired by Lucy’s 30th birthday in Rome – and remains in Missoma’s top 10 best sellers, with more than 50,000 sold to date and one purchased every day. More recently, the 2024 release of the three-piece Lucy Williams’ Entwine Edit drove 40 percent of all online sales in July alone.

Now, to celebrate this remarkable creative journey, Missoma and its long-time muse have launched the aptly named Full Circle collection, which epitomises the fashion tastemaker’s everyday minimalist style combined with the brand’s know-how and craftsmanship. It introduces new silhouettes in gold and silver, and for the first time, 14ct solid gold with diamonds. There are updated takes on iconic styles – like the Entwine and Arco earrings – as well as new arrivals, including reimagined tennis classics, pieces influenced by the renaissance of mixing metals, statement earrings, and Lucy’s spin on the classic Torque Knot necklace.

‘What started as a few sketches over coffee has grown into something I could never have imagined: pieces that have become part of people’s everyday lives,’ says Lucy, known for her chic and laidback style. ‘I’ve always loved the idea that jewellery should feel lived-in and a bit effortless – a part of you rather than just something you put on. This new collection really feels like a full circle moment. It reflects everything I’ve learned over the last decade, moving forward without forgetting where we’ve come from. I really wanted this collection and campaign to feel very London. Rather than daydreaming about far-flung shores, it’s about elevating our everyday routines.’

Creative director Marisa, who founded the demi-fine line in 2007, adds: ‘We had no idea what a breakthrough collaboration it would be – the first of its kind – or how iconic it would become. Time after time, the Lucy Williams x Missoma pieces are embraced by our community because they are so ahead of the trends, but at the same time incredibly wearable. Lucy is that girl next door; her taste is approachable, accessible and attainable.’

Below, Marisa talks about the pair’s pioneering partnership and explains to C&TH why the pieces they create together have stood the test of time.

Marisa Hordern On 10 Years Of Lucy Williams x Missoma

How collaborative is the partnership?

The whole partnership has been genuinely collaborative from day one. Lucy is deeply involved in every stage of the process – from the first concepts and mood boards through to the specs, CADs, 3D prints and samples. She also brings so much energy to the campaign ideas and marketing, making the collaboration feel like a true joint venture. After ten years together, Lucy really is part of the Missoma family. What I love most is that our partnership is built on trust, friendship, and creativity – and that shines through in every collection we create.

Are you generally on the same wavelength?

We’re often on the same wavelength, but what makes the partnership work is the balance. Lucy will usually come with a spark – an idea for something she’s been looking for but can’t find – and that’s what starts the conversation. From there, we’ll brainstorm and shape the concept together. What really underpins everything is respect for each other’s strengths. Lucy has this incredible instinct for style and a feel for what’s coming next, and then we bring our craftsmanship to interpret that into jewellery that’s wearable and the best it can be. Of course, like any relationship, it’s not always perfectly in sync – sometimes it takes compromise and work. But at the heart of it is mutual trust and respect, and that’s what keeps bringing us back together. It’s rare and really special to find that.

What have been some of the highlights for you?

Some of the most meaningful moments are still the everyday ones: spotting someone on the street wearing the Roman Arc Coin, the Horn necklace or malachite pieces. Seeing how people make them their own is the greatest satisfaction. We’ve also shared some amazing adventures together – shooting the Roman collection in Italy, taking the 1987 collection [with its statement chains and T-bar necklaces] to LA, and of course, there have been those surreal pinch-me moments, like seeing Margot Robbie in the Roman Arc Coin necklace at a Women in Film pre-Oscars party in 2023, and then still wearing it at the airport and even surfing days later. From Taylor Swift to Doja Cat, it’s been such an honour to see these pieces loved and lived in all over the world.

The Roman collection is now iconic and has been copied by other brands. How did that come about?

It really started with Lucy. She’d just come back from a trip to Rome for her 30th birthday, completely inspired by the architecture, the statues, the busts and, of course, the ancient coins. That sparked the idea, and we found ourselves down Portobello Road collecting old Roman coins and searching online for references. From there, we reimagined it with our own Missoma twist. Every detail mattered, from the Arc and the triple ridging to the rope chain. The collection was all about layering, with pieces that could be delicate or bold. The Roman Arc necklace, in particular, just hit that perfect sweet spot: nostalgic and historical, but also modern, empowering, and so wearable. It captured a real zeitgeist moment – and Lucy has such a gift for spotting those before they happen.

Do you have a favourite Full Circle piece?

The new collection definitely has a couple of hero pieces. The torque necklace is one of them – I love how solid and striking it feels, with the mix of silver and those gold knots wrapping around it. Another standout has to be the oversized silver knot earrings, which really make a statement. Personally, my favourites are always the pieces I can wear every day. The mixed metal T-bar necklace is one I reach for constantly, and I also love the gold knot hoops with a touch of pavé. What’s special about the collection is that there’s something for everyone – from subtle pieces to bold statements – so you can find what fits your own style.

How do you like to wear your jewellery?

I like to balance things out – if I’m wearing a statement earring, I’ll pair it with a more delicate necklace, or if I’m layering up bold necklaces, I’ll keep the earrings simple. It’s a bit like makeup – you choose either the heavy eye or the red lip, but not both.

But what I love most about jewellery is that there really are no rules. It’s all about self-expression, and we’re constantly inspired by how differently people wear their pieces. Personally, I’ve always been a “more is more” kind of person. I’m a big fan of stacking – I’ll always have a stack of bracelets, and I layer necklaces depending on my mood.

How do you think brands like Missoma have changed the way we wear jewellery?

We were one of the pioneers of demi-fine jewellery – in fact, that term didn’t even exist when we started back in 2007. It took a good seven years of educating people that you can have all three: great quality, great design, and an accessible price point. That balance is still at the heart of everything we do. At the time, there just wasn’t that space in the market for fashion-forward, cool design that was affordable. Now there’s a lot more out there, but what sets us apart is that we never compromise on craftsmanship or quality. I do think it’s changed the way people wear jewellery – it became something you could buy for yourself with your paycheque, to celebrate your own milestones, or to gift to a friend. That shift gave people permission to wear jewellery every single day, to make it part of their identity and lifestyle, and to make memories. That ethos is still what drives us: creating meaningful, beautiful pieces that empower people to express themselves every day – not just on special occasions.

What’s next for Lucy Williams x Missoma?

Right now, we’re just enjoying celebrating 10 incredible years together. When we first started creating our very first collection, we never imagined it would grow into a decade-long collaboration – we were only thinking about the next six months at most! The beauty of this partnership is that it has always been organic. There has never been a rigid plan or pressure – we create when we have something to say and when it feels natural. That’s why it has lasted. We also genuinely love working together. Even though we both have other projects and our own brands, coming back to this collaboration always feels exciting and fresh. So, the future is open – and that’s the fun of it. For now, we’re just proud of what we’ve created, and there’s nothing better than seeing people out in the world wearing and loving these pieces.
