Fifteen years after opening, it's still one of the city's best hotels

From its home on Pacific Place, a complex of office towers, shops and hotels on Hong Kong Island, The Upper House might have opened 15 years ago, but it remains one of the best hotels in the city for those in the know – not least for its impeccable service and iconic views.

STAY

One of designer André Fu’s first and best-known projects, The Upper House is a lesson in timeless understatement. Against the backdrop of Victoria Harbour and magnificent city vistas, all the rooms and suites are decked out in a muted palette of oak and bamboo that create a zen-like base for sleek, clean-lined furnishings and subtle Asian-inspired accents that don’t detract from the views. For an extra-special treat, book the André Fu Suite, which is dressed with the designer’s personal furniture line, André Fu Living.

DO

Located in Admiralty, a short 20-minute walk from buzzing Central and Victoria Harbour, the whole of Hong Kong is on your doorstep. After a day of shopping, exploring and eating, The Upper House  is a calm refuge to return to, and while there isn’t a traditional spa, it offers in-room treatments and has a Wellness Residency programme in partnership with a collection of innovative local companies. This includes classes like Family Form, a body sculpting session, guided meditation, and GOOD Yoga. 10X Longevity, which focuses on long-term vitality, offers treatments with state-of-the-art equipment from hyperbaric oxygen therapy to progressive facial treatments, while Dr. Michelle Zhou McCulloh and her team of chiropractors from UP!health is on hand to alleviate back pain and correct misalignments.

EAT

There is The Lawn, a hidden garden – perfect for a glass of wine and a light bite at the end of the day – The Tea Room, as well as The Continental, a European-style café, that serves favourites from steak tartare to wagyu burgers. But for a meal with a view, head to Salisterra on the 49th floor. Helmed by chef Ricardo Chaneton, the Mediterranean menu features dishes like slow-cooked octopus or whole baked scallop with chorizo, all in a setting designed by Fu with flowing organically-shaped furniture.

THE FINAL WORD

Serene, intimate, there’s nowhere else like The Upper House, where the service is personal and no request is too much.
