The Curriculum

Children learn a wide variety of subjects, but they are also encouraged to develop the means whereby they can retain and reproduce knowledge, find academic self- motivation, feed a hungry mind, learn strong study-skills, and create a determination to set themselves the highest possible standards.

Games & The Arts

An exciting and varied co-curricular programme operates alongside and in conjunction with our curriculum so that children have the opportunity to excel outside the classroom too. Thanks to the school’s location nestled within 40 acres of Surrey countryside, St. Edmund’s’ sporting facilities include a magnificent nine-hole golf course, games fields, a cross-country running course, an indoor swimming pool, netball courts and a floodlit all-weather sports pitch. The arts programme ensures that all children experience a wide range of activities designed to increase not only their skills but also their appreciation and understanding of the world’s cultural heritage.

Pastoral Care

The outstanding level of pastoral care offered at St Edmund’s puts the pupil at the very heart of every decision taken. Staff recognise that every child is unique with individual needs, potential, circumstances, feelings and expectations. The school promotes a powerful and strong sense of community, with pupils of all ages integrating with one another, enabling older pupils the opportunity of sharing their experiences as well as helping and supporting the younger pupils.

Recent Scholarships

Charterhouse (music and academic); Cranleigh (music and academic); Churcher’s College (music and academic).

Head Teacher’s Philosophy

‘Life isn’t about finding yourself, life is about creating yourself.’ Such words by George Bernard Shaw, a former resident of our main school house, perfectly encapsulate the ethos we undertake to instil in every pupil at St Edmund’s. A traditional education with a modern twist, we encourage our children to be themselves and we allow them a voice; most importantly, we listen to what they have to say. St Edmund’s inspires a foundation of decency in every pupil priming them with the time-honoured values of respect and humility, two attributes that are scarce in many aspects of society these days but standards that we see as vital for achieving success in today’s challenging, fast-moving and changing world. With these principles at the heart of school life, it is of natural consequence that our culture superior academic standards and exceptional pastoral care are complemented by our commitment to small teaching groups and a dedication to the practice of learning outside the classroom.

Outstanding Characteristics

Pupil numbers are at their highest level in the school’s history, yet there is still a small-school ethos where staff know every pupil well and where every child makes a difference to the community. During the school’s 2021 ISI Inspection, the inspectors captured the real essence of life at St Edmund’s, commenting: ‘Pupils have outstanding attitudes to their learning and are determined to succeed. Pupils of all ages display excellent knowledge, skills and understanding and develop as highly resilient learners as they move throughout the school’.
