When Will We Get To See House Of The Dragon Season 4?

…And that’s a wrap for another season. No spoilers here, but the eighth and final episode of House of the Dragon season 3 aired in the US last night (and in the wee hours of Monday morning here in the UK), bringing a season full of twists, turns,  hallucinations and James Norton to an end.

Whichever questions you have been left pondering, here is something we know for sure: House of the Dragon will return to our screen for a fourth season. Here’s everything we know so far.

House Of The Dragon Season 4: Plot, Cast, Release Date & More

House of the Dragon was renewed for season 4 way back in August 2024, just after the season 2 finale aired. However, HBO execs warned right then that season 4 would be the last of the much-loved, dragon-filled historical fantasy.

Having debuted on our screens in summer 2022, House of the Dragon is a prequel to HBO’s most successful series ever, Game of Thrones (2011–19), which is based on George R R Martin’s series of fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire. House of the Dragon is based on parts of Martin’s 2018 faux history Fire & Blood, and as such dramatises the Targaryen dynasty, their inconquerable hold on the Seven Kingdoms serving as a backstory to Game of Thrones. Starring Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke, season 1 opens about 100 years after the Seven Kingdoms were united by the Targaryen conquest, nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen.

Epic in scale and treating viewers to far more dragon-based lore and CGI than the original series, House of the Dragon has been somewhat of a saving grace for Martin’s fans, many of whom were disappointed by the conclusion of Game of Thrones back in 2019. Despite Game of Thrones‘ finale flop, more than 10 million people tuned in to the first episode of House of the Dragon on the day it premiered, marking the most successful day in HBO history and serious by-in from audiences.

Season 2 followed in 2024, and the news of season 4 getting the greenlight at this point was not exactly a surprise. In December 2024, Martin visited season 2 on set and wrote on his blog: ‘I also spent two days locked in a room with Ryan Condal and his writing staff (Sara Hess, Ti Mikkel, David Hancock, and Philippa Goslett) talking about the third and fourth seasons of House of the Dragon. They were lively, fun discussions, and we got some good work done… Though two days was not nearly enough. There is so much ground to cover that I am not sure 20 days would have been enough.’

Release Date

No official news just yet, but we suspect House of the Dragon season 4 will air in summer 2028, following the pattern set by the first three seasons. It will air weekly on HBO.

Will There Be Another Spin Off?

While House of the Dragon is the most ambitious in scale, it is not the only Game of Thrones spin-off in the works. For one, there is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a six-episode series that aired in January 2026 and has since been renewed for season 2 (expected in 2027). Starring Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell, it is based on Martin’s much-loved, more playful series of novellas Tales of Dunk and Egg, which opens 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Investing in Westeros makes for big returns, HBO has discovered – though it has been reported that the TV giant is taking ‘a cautious, quality-first approach to any potential spin-offs’. Away from the TV world, however, the world continues to be showcased. RSC’s new play, Game of Thrones: The Mad King, brings Martin’s world to the stage for the very first time. Detailing Robert’s Rebellion and the fall of the final Targaryen King, it serves as a direct prequel to Game of Thrones, and breathes life into the names that haunt the series, including Rhaegar and Aerys Targaryen, Lyanna Stark and Elia Martell, while also showcasing the younger years of Ned and Brandon Stark, Robert Baratheon, and Jaime and Cersei Lannister.

The next spin-off to receive the greenlight is Aegon’s Conquest, which will be brought to the big screen by HBO overhead, Warner Bros. This will finally bring the biggest tale to loom over Westeros to the screen: when Aegon the Conquerer flew to Westeros and united six of the seven kingdoms, along with his sister wives Rhaenys and Visenya and, of course, his dragons: Balerion the Black Dread, Meraxes and Vhagar. Rumour has it the film will premiere after House of the Dragon has wrapped up – so we probably won’t see this one until 2029.

A few other spin-offs have been toyed with, but no movement just yet. They are:

• Ten Thousand Ships: An Odyssey-like epic set around 1,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones, following warrior queen Nymeria (the namesake of Arya Stark’s direwolf) and the surviving Rhoynars who travel from Essos to Dorne following their defeat by Valyria and their dragons.
• Nine Voyages: An animated series exploring the adventures of a young Corlys Velaryon (aka The Sea Snake) before the events of House of the Dragon. Originally intended as live action, budget restrictions have made an animated stand-alone series more likely.
• The Golden Empire: Another animated series exploring Yi-Ti, Martin’s fantasy version of Imperial China briefly mentioned in his books.
