Ice cream is getting an Ottolenghi twist

Ottolenghi already dominates the supermarket shelves with its spice mixes and sauces, and now the foodie empire is making its first foray into the freezer aisle, launching a brand-new range of ice cream.

Ottolenghi Has Launched An Ice Cream Range

Launching exclusively in Waitrose today, 4 August 2025, the collection includes three flavours, which all have a suitably Ottolenghi feel. There’s Madagascan Vanilla & Miso Salted Caramel, described as slightly savoury with an ‘umami edge’; nutty Roasted Pistachio & Sour Cherry Swirl (tapping into one of the biggest trends of the moment); and aromatic, gently spiced Coffee & Cardamom. Made using West Country cream, they’ll no doubt be popular for al fresco feasting this summer.

‘When it comes to desserts, I’m often happier assembling than making from scratch,’ says Yotam Ottolenghi, the brand’s eponymous founder. ‘When everyone’s already satisfied and slightly wine-happy, reaching into the freezer feels like the sensible thing to do. We’ve made our own ice cream using West Country cream and folded in combinations that make me smile. Plus, they’ve been a saviour after I’ve served up a big summer feast.’

Katie Knight, Ice Cream Buyer at Waitrose added, ‘We’re absolutely thrilled to announce the exclusive launch of Ottolenghi’s new ice cream range, bringing our food loving customers an unparalleled taste experience. This new collection of ice creams totally captures what Yotam is all about – incredible, bold flavours, exciting ingredients, and fantastic quality.’

The launch feels very timely, with ice cream one of 2025’s hottest (or coolest?) food trends. While soft serve, of course, has long been a staple of summer, this year we’re seeing a string of buzzy pop-ups arriving in London – from East London baker Lily Vanilli’s gelato bar to Zapote’s taco ice cream parlour. Meanwhile on TikTok, an unlikely pairing has gone viral: wine and ice cream, which is in large part inspired by new Islington hotspot The Dreamery (a favourite with celebrities).

Ice cream has soared in popularity in shops too, according to the latest data from Unilever, which found sales of Magnum, Ben & Jerry’s and Cornetto rose by 5.9 percent in the first half of 2025. Aldi has also reported record ice cream sales this summer – on multiple days in July, a quarter of a million ice creams were sold every hour, a 100 percent jump from the same week in 2024. No doubt the numerous heatwaves the UK has seen this year are a key factor.

Ottolenghi first launched a line of cooking products with Waitrose in 2024. The original range included the likes of Rose & Lemon Harissa, Shawarma Marinade and Miso Pesto, all designed to make creating Ottolenghi-style food easier. A whole host of products are also available to buy on the Ottolenghi website, including hampers, pantry items and wine.

The Ottolenghi story began many years ago in 2002, after Yotam opened his first deli in Notting Hill, alongside co-founders Noam Bar and Sami Tamimi. Word quickly spread about his flavoursome dishes, and before long more cafes and restaurants launched across London. There are now two flagship restaurants, Nopi in Soho and Rovi in Fitzrovia, alongside numerous delis in places like Chelsea, Hampstead and Richmond.

In 2018, Yotam launched his first cookbook, Simple, which catapulted the chef – and his growing brand – to fame. Suddenly, ingredients like harissa, preserved lemon and pomegranate molasses were flying off the shelves. The Ottolenghi effect was sweeping the nation, giving rise to a new style of cooking focused around Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours, often served sharing style. Since then, two more cookbooks have launched under the Ottolenghi umbrella, Flavour and Comfort
