The renowned private members’ club kicks off the season with de Gournay
London is home to an impressive collection of members’ clubs – but none get us talking quite like Annabel’s. We’ve fawned over its pretty pink bathrooms, ogled the gold-dusted walls of its Indian bar and spent plenty of time lingering outside to see its facade decorated in both Amazonian wildcats and festive snow globes. But this summer, we have a new feature to fixate on: the club’s Garden, which has just undergone a transformation at the hands British wallpaper experts de Gournay. Take a peek inside.
Inside The English Summer Garden At Annabel’s
Summer has arrived at Annabel’s. The private members’ club is celebrating the new season in style, with a brand new look in its Garden – now dubbed the English Summer Garden. Tapping de Gournay, who previously worked on the club’s interiors with designer Martin Brudnizki, the space will act as a British botanical oasis in the heart of the club.
‘We wanted to evoke the charm and romance of an English garden at the height of summer through this hand-painted installation,’ said Hannah Cecil Gurney, Director at de Gournay. The designs, a combination of bespoke and archival pieces (some having been first created for fashion label Erdem in 2022), are rooted in the English landscape – winding roses, trailing ivy, fluttering Blue Tits all weaving through the space.
‘A lot of our designs historically have depicted nature,’ noted Gurney. ‘All sorts of studies show that surrounding yourself with nature helps lower your blood pressure and your cortisol – and if you’re looking at nature, it’s said to captivate your subconscious, so that your brain can relax and recover. It has a sort of gentleness to it. Being able to use our wall coverings to bring that to a setting like Annabel’s has been really lovely.’
de Gournay wallpapers sit central to the installation, alongside specially composed tablescapes and menus decorated with the brand’s designs. Botanical parasols and custom lampshades – each hand-painted by de Gournay – complete the space, with the club’s seasonal uniforms also transformed with the help of custom botanical accents.
This, of course, isn’t the first time de Gournay has featured at Annabel’s. When Brudnizki was tasked with redesigning the members’ club for its grand reopening in 2018, the designer sought out de Gournay for several wallpaper installations – including the Elephant Room, papered with views of India, and the nightclub downstairs covered in palms and Brazilian jungle creatures.
Reminiscing on their shared history at a panel event for Annabel’s earlier this week, Brudnizki said how ‘this was the first time we had been able to work together on something really special. It was a bit of a journey of discovery, figuring out exactly what we could do together.’
‘Obviously, our origins are in Chinoisery and in reproducing very faithfully 18th century hand-painted Chinese wallpapers – but over the years, when everything you do is handmade, and clients like Martin are pushing us to innovate and try different things,’ added Gurney. ‘We’ve massively expanded the breadth of what we do and what we can create.’
The Annabel’s English Summer Garden installation launched on 2 June 2026, and will remain in place throughout the summer. annabels.co.uk
