Everything we know so far

Finally Keeley Hawes is back on our screens. The undisputed queen of thrillers – best-known for her roles in Bodyguard, Line of Duty, Honour and Ashes to Ashes, and soon the second series of on-the-run crime drama Prisoner – she’s returned as world-class contract killer Julie in the second season of The Assassin. With all six episodes out on Prime Video today (6 November), viewers are in for plenty more twists, turns and high stakes action. Still reeling from the finale? Here’s everything we know about The Assassin season 3.

What Is The Assassin About?

The Assassin was written and created by brother duo Harry and Jack Williams, who have worked across everything from Hotel Babylon to Call the Midwife. However, they’re best known for their production company, Two Brothers Pictures, set up in 2014, which counts Fleabag, Liar, The Missing, One of Us, The Tourist and plenty more amongst its credits.

The series centres around retired British assassin Julie (Keeley Hawes), who in the first season, lives a sun-soaked, secluded life on a Greek island. But the peace is disrupted when Julie is contacted by her estranged son, Edward (Freddie Highmore), who visits her from England in a somewhat thorny reunion. Edward is looking for answers – about his father, about his mother’s past – but he can’t find the right time to talk to his frustratingly emotionally distant mother. When he finally does, both get more than they bargained for when Julie’s past suddenly catches up with her, and they’re forced to go on the run together across Europe.

Now on the move, Edward’s hunt for the truth clashes with Julie’s secrecy – but the two must work together to survive. A dark conspiracy emerges and, in a race against time, Julie must fight to save Edward and their dysfunctional relationship in a battle that unfolds across nations and across time.

What Happened In Season 2?

Where the first season was set and filmed in Greece, in season 2 the action tranfers to Spain (though it was filmed in and around Malta). Despite the sunny scenery, the air feels icy from the go. Somewhere between their reconciliation at the end of season one and the start of season two, a new rift has split between Julie and her adopted son Edward (Freddie Highmore).

Though he was always critical of her assassinating ways, their relationship seems to have grown sour since his visit to his biological mother that he planned at the end of season 1. So much so, that Julie is banned from his wedding to his new wife Kayla (Shalom Brune-Franklin).

Without Edward to hold her back, the retired assassin returns to her sharp-shooting ways, and goes on the pull. Her catch? Charismatic Frenchman Bastien (Arnaud Binard) – but there’s a sense that he may not be all that he seems. When, on his honeymoon with Kayla in Spain, Edward finds his new wife kidnapped, he’s forced to call up Julie for help, fearing that the local police may be in on the crime.

Will There Be A Season 3?

No news yet from Prime Video about The Assassin season 3. Considering the first season nabbed the top spot on the streamer in the UK, it looks like viewers are hungry for more. We’ll have to wait and see how this second season performs, but right now it seems likely that a third instalment will be greenlit.

When Would The Assassin Season 3 Be Released?

Season 1 of The Assassin premiered on 25 July 2025 in the UK on Prime Video, meaning there was just a little over a year’s wait between the instalments. If a third season is given the go ahead, we’re guessing it would be released in early 2028. Stay tuned for updates.
