Here's everything we know about the second instalment of the crime thriller
From period dramas to crime thrillers, Keeley Hawes can do no wrong. She’s played Jane Austen’s sister Cassandra in Miss Austen, won best actress for her performance as DI Lindsay Denton in Line of Duty, charmed the nation in The Durrells, and can currently be seen in high-octane thriller The Assassin. Not one to settle down, the Bodyguard star now has a new role up her sleeve, as she prepares to go on the run in Sky’s heart-racing cat-and-mouse police drama Prisoner for series 2. Here’s everything we know so far.

What Happened In Prisoner Series 1?
The first series of Prisoner followed Amber Todd (Izuka Hoyle), a prison guard and new mother, who is assigned to transport Tibor Stone (Tahar Rahim) – a former hitman and key witness against the Pegasus Crime Network – alongside her colleague Joe.
Pegasus operatives stage a violent ambush en route. Joe is killed, and Amber handcuffs herself to Tibor as they escape to a nearby hideout. On the run from Pegasus, the pair traverse the country, Tibor suffering from insulin crashes and Amber withholding his medication as leverage to protect her family. The National Crime Unit (NCU) attempts to track them down and return them to safety, all while uncovering a corrupt mole within their ranks working for Pegasus boss Harrison Dempsey (Brían F. O’Byrne) and his son Declan (Laurie Davidson).
In the explosive final episode Amber reaches the courthouse with Tibor. But then, in a surprise move, he denies knowing Harrison, resulting in his acquittal. With the Pegasus crew once again free, Tibor escapes custody and directs Amber to Harrison’s mansion, explaining that he did what he did because they would both still be unsafe if the crime boss was in prison. He turns on the syndicate, killing Harrison and his crew – for which Pegasus member Nina (Leonie Benesch) punishes him by killing Tibor in return. Nina escapes into the night while Amber is reunited with her family.

What Will Happen?
Scarred by last season’s events, Amber is struggling to move on and repair her fractured family when she becomes entangled in the expatriation of Dr. Regan Weaver (Keeley Hawes), a brilliant psychologist and notorious prisoner.
Framed for murder, Amber is forced to go on the run with Regan, and the two form an unexpected bond as they are hunted by criminals, governments and rogue police, all desperate to get their hands on Weaver and the secrets she has spent decades hiding.
‘Amber went to hell and back in season one, taking the audience with her every step of the way,’ said creator Matt Charman of the second series. ‘But to raise the stakes in season two, we needed a prisoner who would push her further than ever. Having Keeley join us is a dream come true. She’s one of our finest actresses, and she is mesmerising as Dr. Regan Weaver – and absolutely terrifying too.’
Who Will Star?
Alongside Keeley Hawes, Scottish star Izuka Hoyle will reprise her role as prison officer Amber Todd. Also returning to the show are Catherine McCormack as police officer Josephine Campbell, Leonie Benesch as Pegasus member Nina, Finn Bennett as Olly Hatton, Ken Nwosu as Phil Hawkins, Daniel Betts as Marcus Turner, Jessica Barker-Wren as Nancy Howard, and Michele Austin as Kelly Douglas.
New cast members confirmed for the second installment include Solly McLeod (Star City, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), David Dawson (My Policeman, Elsinore), and Elijah Cook (The Diplomat, Silo).
When Will Prisoner Series 2 Be Released?
Prisoner series 2 has only just started filming in Wales, so it seems there might be quite a wait until the next season. Right now a late 2027 or early 2028 release date seems most likely. Stay tuned for more details.
