Everything you need to know
Much like her Devil Wears Prada co-star Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway isn’t one to let fame go to her head. Though the Les Misérables and Interstellar actress has the cash to easily splash out on a dizzying property portfolio, Hathaway – much like we’d imagine the down-to-earth Andy Sachs – is more a one-property-at-a-time kind of girl. Want to know where the star has lived throughout her career? Here’s your complete guide to Anne Hathaway’ property portfolio.

Ojai, California
Today, Anne Hathaway’s one and only primary residence is a Swiss-style chalet in Ojai, Southern California, which she shares with her husband, fellow-actor Adam Shulman. Built in 1906 by architect Myron Hunt, the property was previously owned by director Wes Anderson and (in true Devil Wears Prada fashion) the designer Yves Saint Laurent. Drawing on the aesthetics of these previous owners, as well as the more sporadic inspirations of David Bowie and Rihanna, the house was imagined as a space ‘filled with music and beauty’ – or so says designer Pamela Shamshiri of Studio Shamshiri.
The eclectic yet curated maximalist design of the rustic-chic estate is said to take ‘cues from the romance and idiosyncrasy of [the] architecture’ and the surrounding area. The former wood-pannelled hunting lodge was updated for the present day through soothing colour palettes and vintage furnishings while working hard to ‘preserve the integrity and charm’ of the original structure. Set within 1.38 acres of land, the rooms are ‘designed for communal interaction’, from the kitchen island to the breakfast nook that ‘echoes the glorious mountain views’.
NYC, New York
It seems that it’s almost a requirement that all good American A-listers own a Manhattan apartment with Central Park views. And Anne Hathaway joined the pack in 2016 when she purchased a two-bedroom penthouse on the Upper West Side for a reported $2.55m. One of only five units in a brick-fronted Neo-Georgian townhouse, the home was renovated by the actress with the help of Gramercy Design to pair period details with contemporary updates. Eventually growing tired of the Big Apple, Anne and Adam listed the penthouse in 2020 for $3.495m.
Westport, Connecticut
Purchased in 2017 for $2.79m, this Connecticut home was only owned by Anne Hathaway and her husband for a little over a year – sold at a loss in 2018 for $2.7m. Named CompoBello, the property sits on the Gold Coast along Long Island Sound, only 48 miles northeast of NYC. Spanning 4,561 sqft, this New England coastal farmhouse offers up oak flooring, a rustic stone fireplace, coffered ceilings, skylights, French doors, a soft neutral colour palette and white-shingle facade. The master suite is said to boast a dressing hall, a vintage-style bathroom, and its own private redwood deck overlooking the gardens below. In the backyard, the home features a number of terraces, including one with an outdoor kitchen and grilling station, as well as a saltwater swimming pool and spa, plus an additional barn that can be used as an office or a guest home, and an attached guesthouse with its own renovated kitchen.
NYC, New York
Before she bought up her Central Park penthouse, Anne Hathaway’s first foray into NYC was a three-bedroom home in the Clock Tower Condominium which she purchased for $4.1m in 2012. Located next to Brooklyn Bridge in Dumbo, New York, the property enjoyed views of the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan Bridge and the Empire State Building. Reports claim that the star did not actually live-in in the ninth-floor apartment but used it as a ‘crash pad for her clothes’ while staying with Adam Shulman who had another unit in the same building – we think Miranda Priestly would approve. The star listed the property for $4.5m only a year after purchasing it.
