This nine bedroom mansion, designed by architect Jonathan Stout, is on sale for the first time

Few homes in Malibu can claim quite the same Hollywood pedigree as Venezia Pacifica. Rising dramatically above the coveted Point Dume cliffs, the sprawling oceanfront estate has served as the backdrop for some of the biggest films, television series, and music videos of the 1990s and early 2000s. Now, for the first time since it was built, the landmark residence has arrived on the market with a $90 million price tag.

Set in one of Malibu’s most exclusive enclaves, where neighbours include Jennifer Aniston and Leonardo DiCaprio, Venezia Pacifica was commissioned by the late developer Ken Harges after he purchased the site for a reported $1.7 million in 1988. Completed three years later, its palatial scale and dramatic ocean setting soon made it one of Hollywood’s favourite filming locations.

The estate can be spotted in the 1999 Mike Myers comedy sequel Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, where it served as Dr Evil’s lair. It also featured in the pilot episode of smash-hit teen drama series The O.C.; the long-running crime procedural show, CSI: Miami; and The Brady Bunch Movie. Music fans may also recognise the mansion from Jermaine Dupri and JAY0Z’s iconic 1998 video for ‘Money Ain’t a Thang’, which was shot on the property’s sun-drenched terraces.

Designed by architect Jonathan Stout, the residence occupies more than an acre of land overlooking the Pacific Ocean, offering uninterrupted coastal views from almost every room. Spanning a staggering 17,700 sqft, the nine bedroom home draws heavily on the grandeur of the Italian Renaissance, a reflection of the Harges family’s love of travelling through Italy. Inspired by the great villas of Tuscany and the palazzos of Venice, the architecture combines old world craftsmanship with the scale expected of a modern Californian estate. Expansive windows and French doors flood the interiors with natural light, while carefully positioned terraces allow for blended indoor and outdoor living, meaning that the ocean remains a constant presence throughout the home.

Monumental columns and sweeping arches establish an unmistakably palatial feel and the interiors are rich in detail, with the home offering coffered ceilings, carved stone floors, and grand fireplaces throughout. A dramatic spiral staircase centres the home’s entranceway, accompanied by an ornate wrought-iron lift connecting the primary living spaces. Underground, there is a 9,500 sqft garage with enough room for up to 20 cars.

The entertaining spaces are equally theatrical. A spectacular double height ballroom sits beneath a barrel vaulted glass ceiling, while multiple formal living and dining rooms, a wood-panelled study, private cinema, and multiple bars ensure the home is as suited to large scale entertaining as it is to everyday living. The chef’s kitchen continues the Mediterranean aesthetic with warm brick finishes and twin islands designed for gathering. Upstairs, the principal suite serves as a secluded retreat, complete with an expansive bedroom, dressing room and walk-in wardrobe, alongside a Roman inspired marble bathroom that echoes the home’s classical influences.

Outside, broad terraces unfold towards panoramic ocean views, leading to landscaped gardens centred around a resort style swimming pool and spa. An oceanfront pavilion and multiple alfresco dining spaces make the most of Malibu’s year round sunshine, creating a setting designed for long afternoons overlooking the Pacific.

Perhaps the estate’s rarest luxury, however, lies beyond its gates. Included with the property is a coveted key to Riviera III, one of only three private, gated beaches along Point Dume. Granting direct access to one of Malibu’s most exclusive stretches of coastline, it is a privilege afforded to only a handful of homeowners, cementing Venezia Pacifica’s place among the area’s most remarkable addresses.
