Charlotte Church’s Welsh Cottage Is Up For Sale – Take A Look Inside

She may be best-known for possessing the ‘voice of an angel’, but these days Charlotte Church spends less time singing and more time running a Welsh wellness retreat known as The Dreaming. Whilst this retreat is hosted in the 15th century Rhydoloh House – a sprawling manor set in the Welsh countryside – Charlotte Church’s own home is much humbler in size. Inside Charlotte Church’s Home

Rhydoloh House may date back to the 1400s, but Charlotte Church’s semi-detached Welsh cottage isn’t far off in age. Boasting a history that spans to the mid-1600s, it is described as one of the oldest homes in Barry’s Old Village. ‘The location is fantastic, and all the nearby green spaces make it easy to get out with the children and dogs – the parks are brilliant for gatherings and parties,’ Charlotte Church and her husband, the musician Jonathan Powell, told estate agents Fine & Country. ‘Living here gives us the best of both worlds – beach and woodlands one way, shops and restaurants the other.’

The star reportedly purchased the home just over two years ago, for around £10,000 less than it’s now being advertised. The move came after the Celebrity Traitors star sold her six-bedroom mansion, The Spinney, in Dinas Powys for £2.1m in order to fund her purchase of Rhydoloh House back in 2024.

Initially on the hunt for a field from which to found a glamping business, she instead stumbled across Rhydoloh – the former home of designer Laura Ashley – and fell ‘madly in love’. Set within 49 acres of land, it was this surrounding countryside that really captured Charlotte’s heart. ‘It’s flanked by two incredible waterfalls and feels so magical, restorative and peaceful,’ she told The Metro. ‘When I started thinking about how I could create a wellness centre, a retreat that was affordable for everyone, suddenly everything fell into place.’

She put down £1.5m for it and budgeted £500,000 for the renovation. ‘Every member of my family and every one of my friends thought I was mad,’ she said of the project. The renovations were all captured on camera for her docu-series, Charlotte Church’s Dream Build, which aired in 2022 on Discovery+.

In comparison to Rhydoloh House, her South Wales cottage is described as a ‘real TARDIS’. Set on a quiet road in the historic heart of Barry’s Old Village, just five minutes from the park and seafront, the four-bedroom property retains many of its period details – including exposed beams, an original staircase and historic fireplace – enhanced by Church’s modern updates. ‘We love the spirit of the house; it feels alive and balanced, with everything in its right place,’ said Church. ‘We knew as soon as we walked in that it was right, from the fluency of design and use of space to the clever mix of old and new. It’s an easy home to fall in love with.’

Today, the interiors are inspired by her and her husband’s travels to Morocco and Africa, having introduced natural materials, reclaimed wooden flooring and hessian carpets. ‘It’s such a special place to be,’ added Church, ‘especially once you’re cocooned inside.’

The house opens up through the front porch that leads through to the first of three reception rooms. From here, it flows through to a central hallway with stairs and a generous open-plan living space complete with a log burner and patio doors. This then connects through to a dining room slash kitchen complete with sliding patio doors that open onto the rear garden. Beyond the kitchen there’s a utility room and ‘retreat-like bathroom’, as well as a home office and further reception room – complete with exposed floors, a log burner, original bread oven and second 17th century staircase. This carries guests up to the home’s four bedrooms, family bathroom and shower room. One bedroom even benefits from an en suite shower room and roof terrace – ‘a perfect spot for sunbathing and enjoying sea views’, says Church.

Out back, sits a substantial garden with a patio, BBQ space and pergola, as well as a lawned area, mature planting, fruit bushes, herb plantings and two sheds. Notably, there are also two studio spaces, one with an additional WC, with potential to be transformed into a home office, gym, music studio, teenage retreat, or self-contained annexe (subject to planning permission). To the front, a large driveway and an additional storage shed. ‘The house wraps around the garden, giving it a courtyard-like feel. It’s practical too, with a covered area that makes it enjoyable year-round,’ said Church of the garden. ‘We’ve added banana plants, fruit-bearing shrubs, and fragrant flowers in sunset and sunrise shades – pinks, purples, oranges, blues, peaches, yellows. It feels otherworldly, a real sanctuary away from the busyness of life.’
