Actor, producer, business woman and excitably empathetic talk show host, Drew Barrymore seemingly does it all. And now she’s got a new skill to add to her CV: home renovator. Having done up this country retreat in upstate New York, she’s now put the historic home up on the market for almost $5m.
Discover Drew Barrymore’s Home: 19 Winfield, New York
Dating back to 1747, by US standards 19 Winfield is an impressively old home. And while many remnants of its impressive legacy remain throughout the interiors, in more recent years it has enjoyed a glow-up courtesy of actress-turned-home-renovator Drew Barrymore:
Fed up with the long drive to the Hamptons where she used to keep a weekend home, from her primary base in NYC, two years ago Drew Barrymore began her hunt for a more local retreat. And just 35 minutes from the Big Apple, 19 Winfield in Westchester County, New York couldn’t have been more perfect. ‘I walked in and felt immediately that I was meant to be there, that I was meant to work on this house,’ she said. ‘It felt almost like a strange, spiritual calling.’ Elsewhere she mentioned that it felt like her family had been in this house.
One of the key aspects which charmed her was the home’s puzzle-like layout, with its winding hallways and rooms that revealed themselves where you’d least expect them: ‘I’m really into odd formations and the bones of the house,’ she told Rue.
In 2024 she signed her name on the dotted line for a cool $4.4m. Drawing on the aesthetic vision curated by her Beautiful by Drew homeware collection, she embarked on a full scale renovation of the six-bedroom, nine-bathroom property. Where she’d expected some light wallpapering and paint (‘Between Pinterest, thrifting and a can of paint, there’s nothing you can’t do,’ she told The Wall Street Journal) soon she was installing plumbing, heating and air conditioning. Despite making comparisons between herself and Shelley Long’s character in The Money Pit (in which a young couple invest all their life savings into a dilapidated house which requires constant repair), it seems that the work paid off, as she’s now putting it back on the market for over half a mill more.
Look Inside
Spanning 5,600 sqft, the five-bedroom main house opens with a chalet-style foyer anchored by a limestone fireplace, before unfolding into a light-filled room with 30-foot ceilings, expansive windows and floor-to-ceiling doors. Designed with an open plan flow, the dark-wood kitchen, dining room, sitting room, sunlit conservatory, living room and tomato-red family room (with exposed beams) also sit on this level.
Up above, the primary suite is a private retreat with its very own sitting room, walk-in wardrobe, Juliet balcony, large picture window and not one, but two, ensuite bathrooms. Additionally, there are three family bedrooms, two bathrooms and a finished, livable attic. Beyond the main house, the estate boasts a pool house complete with a living room, bedroom, bath, laundry room and kitchen, plus a guest cottage with a loft, living room, bath and kitchen.
Having grown up among the wilds of California, one of Barrymore’s primary draws to this house was the connection it offered to the nature. ‘I had desperately wanted a place outside the city because I had been working for years at this point inside of a studio with no windows,’ she told Rue. ‘I’m from California and I just had this urge to find nature.’ Set within 12 acres of grounds (making it one of the largest lots in south Westchester) the gardens feature everything from wildflower-filled meadows and wooded groves to a freeform Gunite heated pool. ‘It’s really like being in your own personal park,’ said Drew. ‘There are tons of deer. There are pheasants, there are ducks, there are rabbits.’
A little under an hour’s drive from her Manhattan home, it’s the perfect weekend base for the busy star. When she’s not hiding out at 19 Wingfield, Drew Barrymore primarily lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side with her two daughters.
On the market for $4,995,000. Find out more at compass.com
