It's almost as star-studded as the Cotswolds

Yummy mummies of Hampstead watch out: Ryan Gosling is officially a local. The star has relocated to the London neighbourhood with his wife Eva Mendes and their two kids, making him the latest in a long line of celebs to call the area home. Filming the new Star Wars film Starfighter in London, this isn’t the first time the La La Land star has lived in the UK, having previously settled down in Notting Hill while filming Project Hail Mary. So why has he looked north, rather than west, for this latest endeavour?

While the Cotswolds is currently attracting every celebrity from Beyoncé and Ellen DeGeneres to Claudia Winkleman and David Beckham, our A-listers still need a London home to call their own. And of all the London spots, Hampstead is one of the most start-studded.

Combining the chocolate box feel and greenery of the countryside with the convenience of the big city (being only a 20 minutes private car ride away), it’s no wonder that nearby Bishops Avenue has been dubbed Billionaire’s Row. Having attracted everybody from Elizabeth Taylor to Taylor Swift – who camped out there during the 2010s with her ex ‘London Boy’ Joe Alwyn – NW3 seems to have become the new Beverly Hills.

But with celebrities dotted all around the city – and a large chunk of those split between the neighbouring Hampstead, Primrose Hill, Belsize Park and Highgate – it can be hard to keep track of which stars are living by the Heath at any given time. Here’s a roundup of all the celebs who currently call Hampstead home.

Which Celebrities Live In Hampstead?

Harry Styles

Having lived there since 2012 during his One Direction days, it seems that Styles is now on a mission to colonise the entire suburb for himself. The star has reportedly bought-up a total of four homes on the same private street in a bid to transform them into the ultimate mega-mansion. Expected to be completed in 2027, he is currently merging two luxury homes on a private estate near Hampstead Heath to create one £30m property complete with four bedrooms, a gym, home cinema, art gallery and staff quarters. Despite his bid for privacy, the singer can frequently be spotted Lime biking around, swimming in the ponds, hunting for the city’s best bakery and holding hands with rumoured girlfriend, actress and singer Zoë Kravitz.

Dua Lipa

Though Taylor Swift has bid ‘so long’ to Hampstead, Styles is far from the only pop star to call the area home. Hampstead local Dua Lipa – who attended the local Parliament Hill School for girls – owns a three-bedroom Victorian mansion in West Hampstead. Having purchased the property for around £6.75m at the start of 2020, she has since received planning permission to install a basement swimming pool, steam room, show, changing room, cinema, and recording studio. The plans also included knocking down an existing rear extension and replacing it with a new family room, as well introducing clay tiles on the outside walls and incorporating a green roof. Well-known for her book club Service95, Lipa also has a library room and drawing room, alongside her open-plan kitchen, garden and dining area.

Rita Ora & Taika Waititi

Another Albanian pop girl to add to the list, Rita Ora uprooted her West London life (raised in Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove before later living in Holland Park) in 2022 for a new home in Hampstead Heath, close to Primrose Hill. Describing the area as ‘so bougie’, she told Vogue Australia: ‘The house is so earthy. The garden has its own personality. This home felt like it was my own sort of cottage within the city, which is so hard to find in a city like London […] It just felt like if I didn’t get this house, I’d be an idiot.’ Built in 1877, the property was once home to illustrator Arthur Rackham – the creator behind Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Peter Pan. Today, the six-bedroom Grade-II listed home is decked out in vintage furniture sourced from Portobello Road market.

Helena Bonham Carter

While Helena Bonham Carter now lives closer to the Belsize Park area of North London, she also grew up in the Hampstead area and more recently shared a large Primrose Hill house with ex-partner Tim Burton. She can often be spotted having a dip at the Kenwood Ladies Pond, munching on local ice cream cones in the dead of winter, and sampling pub lunches at The Wells Tavern.

Daniel Craig & Rachel Weisz

The James Bond star moved in to Hampstead home with his wife, the actress Rachel Weisz, following their marriage in 2011. Moving into her £3.3m four-storey Primrose Hill property, the building reportedly dates back to 1840. In 2023, the stars submitted planning permission to replace the ‘poorly constructed’ 20th century conservatory, relocate the kitchen and add in a guest bathroom.

Jonathan Ross

The talk-show host turned expert Traitor, lives in Hampstead with his wife Jane Goldman. While he doesn’t have Traitors turret to call his own when back in London, he does have his very own man cave complete with board game memorabilia, iconic movie characters like Godzilla, a gaming chair, superhero comic posters and limited-edition merchandise from classic sci-fi series.

Stephen Fry

Faithful rival Stephen Fry is also a Hampstead native, living in the western half of the suburb. Speaking about his home, he told the London Evening Standard: ‘I fell in love with this extraordinary house. It’s an ordinary terraced house, but an architect scooped out the inside and created all these different levels. There are two trees growing through the middle.’

Ricky Gervais

Comedian Ricky Gervais lives in a £14.5m Hampstead home, boasting nine bedrooms, a spa and its very own gym. Purchasing the mansion last year, he admitted he bought the property on the hunt for a larger garden, with room to build a tennis court. However, he admitted that it’s unlikely to be his ‘forever home’, citing that it wouldn’t be suitable for him and his wife in their 80s.

Cat Deeley

TV presenter Cat Deeley moved to Hampstead with her now-estranged husband Patrick Kielty in 2003. Purchasing a 1950s house, the property has undergone extensive renovations to transform it into a California inspired home. The renovations are said to include a brand new entrance hall, open plan living area, nanny suite guest room, his and her dressing rooms, children’s play area and its very own bar.

Emma Thompson & Greg Wise

Living on the same streets where she grew up in West Hampstead, Emma Thompson and her actor husband Greg Wise are just across the road from her mother, actress Phyllida Law. Keen to protect the area’s local character, she joined villagers in a campaign against plans to build a Malibu style mansion in the conservation area in 2023.

Benedict Cumberbatch

Sitting just outside the Hampstead area in Gospel Oak, the Marvel star lives in a £3.5m redbrick Victorian townhouse. Much like Harry Styles, he has previously owned and combined properties in the area to create one larger home and joined Ed Miliband’s wife in a protest against development plans for a six-storey block of flats which threatened to destroy the local character.

Michael Palin

Living in Gospel Oak, just next door to Hampstead, the Monty Python actor has also been vocal about threats of over-developing, warning that these new developments could potentially push out local families. ‘Oak Village in itself is a good community,’ he said. ‘I think it’s the relationship the houses have with each other. No one drives. People have to meet and they get on. I’ve always found people terrifically friendly and supportive […] It’s very special and not pretending to be something it’s not.’

Alastair Campbell

Former journalist and Tony Blair strategist turned ‘The Rest Is Politics’ podcast host has lived in Hampstead with his family for over 30 years. A regular Parliament Hill Lido swimmer, he can be spotted there even when the pool dips into minus degrees. ‘The idea of moving house fills me with terror,’ he told My London in 2021. ‘We have only lived here and in one other house, in Oak Village […] I’d never live in South but then I’d never live anywhere else in London.’

Thierry Henry

Though born in France, the living Arsenal legend has called Hampstead home since 2021. He submitted plans to demolish his original £10m mansion to build a new 40ft home with a four-storey fish tank at its heart.

Claudia Schiffer

Much like Henry, while Claudia Schiffer was born and raised in Germany, the supermodel has lived in London since the early 2000s, following her marriage to filmmaker Matthew Vaughn. Originally residing in Notting Hill before they settled in Hampstead, the couple also boast a second home in Sussex.

Boy George (& Nicole Kidman…)

While Boy George technically owns a Hampstead property, after failing to sell it for the £17m asking price he decided to put the Grade-II listed gothic mansion up for rent last year – all for a cool £65,000 a month. Built in 1868, over the decades the house was divided into several different properties, before being reimagined as a singular home by the star. In 2015, singer Sam Smith bought the house next door before selling it to Boy George who undertook a three three renovation project with designer Kelly Hoppen. Though Boy George no longer lives in the London home, it has attracted another famous face in the form of Nicole Kidman. Following her recent split from country singer star Keith Urban she’s reportedly been living in the London home while filming Practical Magic 2 in the UK.

Having sold their home to Boy George, the singer relocated less than a mile down the road to a £12m, five-bedroom Hampstead mansion.
