Joni Mitchell’s Former Malibu Home Hits the Market For $27m

On 31 March 2015, beloved singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell was found unconscious in her Bel Air home, having suffered a brain aneurysm. Now 82, the Canadian star is still alive and kicking, physical therapy and rehabilitation giving her the tools to walk, talk, play and perform once again. Though she now spends most of her time in her home country of Canada, remnants of her Californian heyday remain – including her Malibu estate, now on the market for $27 million. 

Located on Malibu’s Colony Beach, this 4,000 sqft residence was designed by renowned SoCal architect Ron Goldman, who was commissioned by Mitchell to create her dream home. The result: a modern interpretation of a Cape Cod bungalow, that pairs a traditional clapboard aesthetic with soaring skylight ceilings and plenty of natural light. Today, the home remains faithful to Goldman’s design, having been owned by the same family for 40 years since Mitchell’s time there. 

Where Else Has Joni Mitchell Lived?

When Mitchell first made the move from Canada to the States, she shacked up in a Detroit apartment with her first husband, the folk singer Chuck Mitchell. Located on Ferry Street, near Detroit’s Cultural Center, the apartment featured in her 1966 song ‘I Had A King’. Divorcing her husband in 1967, she then relocated to her Laurel Canyon home in LA. Purchased in the spring of 1968 using royalties from her debut album, Song to a Seagull, she lived here with her then-boyfriend Graham Nash, writing the song ‘Our House’ together about their home. 

Breaking up with Nash in 1970, Mitchell used the success of her albums Blue (1971) and Court and Spark (1974), to purchase a grand Spanish Colonial residence in Bel Air that was featured in Architectural Digest. The 11-time Grammy winner still owns the home, where she hosts her famous ‘Joni Jams’. Mitchell started these intimate, invite-only sessions after her health scare over a decade ago. The star reflected on the scary ordeal during the 2026 Juno Awards, where she received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

‘I’m so glad to be back in Canada,’ said Mitchell, who grew up in Saskatoon. ‘Some years ago – 10 or 12 years ago, I forget how long ago – I had an aneurysm, which changed my life, oddly, for the better.’ She told the crowd how the coma helped her quit smoking, and also explained how her medical support staff has enriched her life. ‘My home’s filled up with the most wonderful nurses. I was on the road with men for years and years and years, now I live with a house full of women, and I have a fantastic therapist [who] goes everywhere with me,’ she said. ‘So my life has changed for the better out of a catastrophe, like a phoenix who grows a better life.’

It wasn’t until the early 1980s, that the ‘Blue’ singer finally acquired this beach front home, now for sale. Currently owned by a former Walt Disney Company board director, the five-bedroom, five-bathroom property enjoys direct beach access with panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean. Inside, the great room leads through to the dining area and gallery kitchen – the glass walls flooding the area with light and seaside vistas. 

From here, a corkscrew staircase winds to the second-floor bedrooms, where the ocean-facing primary suite enjoys a private balcony overlooking the water, stainless-steel jetted tub and dressing area. The ocean-facing solarium was one of Mitchell’s favourite spaces to create, with photographs by Henry Diltz showing her painting at an easel. The highlight of its home however is its ‘grandfathered’ pool and spa. Exempt from new laws and planning regulations that were implemented after its construction, the estate agents explain that both features would be ‘extraordinarily difficult to recreate under today’s coastal regulations’. Surrounded by an all-glass railing, the pool treats swimmers to further ocean views, while the surrounding stone terraces are the perfect spot for al fresco entertaining.
