Here's what you need to know
Announced last spring, the Harry Potter reboot will bring J.K. Rowling’s beloved wizard novels back to the screen – this time, the small screen. That’s right: it’s not a sequel nor a prequel, but reportedly a ‘faithful’ adaptation of Rowling’s original seven novels crafted by an all-star team at HBO. With a fresh faced trio of Harry, Ron and Hermione set to star and filming officially underway, here’s what you need to know.

What Will Season 1 Be About?
Staying true to the books, season 1 of the Harry Potter reboot will follow the events of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. This instalment of the series acts as an introduction to the characters, stories and events that take place in the Wizarding World – laying the foundations for the next six seasons.
Based on J.K. Rowling’s fantasy children’s novels centred on orphaned wizard Harry Potter and his time at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the original seven books spawned eight movies, with the grand finale – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – split into two.
It seems this TV reboot will similarly be at least seven seasons long, chronicling the action of each novel in each season – giving plenty more breathing room to the novels’ intricate details lamentably missing from the films; rumours suggest we’re looking at a 10-year journey from now to completion, a similar timeline to the films (which were released between 2001 and 2011).

For an idea of what to expect from season 1, HBO Max shared a quick synopsis:
‘There is nothing special about Harry Potter – at least that’s what his Aunt Petunia always says. On his 11th birthday, a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry opens up a hidden world for Harry: one of fun, friendship and magic. But with this new adventure comes great risk as Harry is forced to face a dangerous enemy from his past.’
Is There A Trailer?
Your first look at the Harry Potter TV series is here. HBO Max released the official trailer for the show, alongside teaser images, on 25 March 2026. In it, we get our first full look at the cast taking on the beloved roles of the Wizarding World, with a familiar introduction to the Boy Who Lived as he struggles to find his footing in the Muggle World – before starting a new chapter at Hogwarts.

Why Are They Making A Harry Potter Reboot?
The idea with a Harry Potter TV reboot has been toyed with since 2019, with various prequels and sequels for the small screen discussed – but eventually ditched. Flash forward to 2021, David Zaslav became the new CEO of Warner Bros and travelled to London to meet author J.K. Rowling to discuss possible TV shows in her universe. With the whopping success of the eight original films and the enduring appeal of the franchise proved by the popularity of the Hogwarts Legacy video game in 2023, it’s a no brainer: a TV series will generate more cash for Warner Bros and please old fans who perceive shortcomings in the original films, all while attracting a whole new generation of wizarding world fans.
A month after Hogwarts Legacy hit the shelves, things really started moving: Warner Bros closed a deal with Rowling for an adaptation, with the author playing a part in creative development. In April of the same year, the reboot idea was confirmed: the TV series won’t be anything new, but instead a faithful adaptation of Rowling’s original seven books, with seven seasons beginning with the first in 2027. Full steam ahead!

Where Is It Being Filmed?
Filming is officially underway on HBO’s Harry Potter reboot at the Warner Bros’ studio in Leavesden, just outside of London. Here, recent projects include Barbie (2023), Mickey 17 (2025), The Batman (2022) and Wicked (2024), as well as the original films back in the day.
Who Will Star?
Paapa Essiedu, John Lithgow, Nick Frost, Janet McTeer, Paul Whitehouse and Luke Thallon were the first members of the Harry Potter TV cast to be revealed. They will star as Severus Snape, Albus Dumbledore, Hagrid, Minerva McGonagall, Argus Filch and Quirinus Quirrell respectively.
Next, Harry, Ron and Hermione were revealed – after being sifted from more than 32,000 audition tapes. They are Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Read all about their casting here.

Elsewhere on the cast list, Johnny Flynn is set to star as Lucius Malfoy, with newcomer Lox Pratt signed on to star as his son and Harry’s nemesis, Draco Malfoy. Also enrolling at Hogwarts are Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, and Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown.
Among the adults, Everything I Know About Love star Bel Powley will star opposite Daniel Rigby as Harry’s Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon Dursley respectively. Their son Dudley Dursley will be played by Amos Kitson.
As for Ron’s parents, Julie Walters is passing the baton to British TV stalwart Katherine Parkinson, who will be the new Molly Weasley. The final additions to the cast (so far) are Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.
