Here’s everything we know so far
Did scene stealer Adjoa Andoh just accidentally confirm a second season of Bridgerton’s beloved spin-off might be in the works? It’s been two years since Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story debuted on Netflix, starring India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest as young versions of Queen Charlotte and King George, tracing their courtship and the early days of the King’s mental illness. And at a talk at the Italian Global Series Festival (where she received a Maximo Excellence Award), Andoh, who reprises her Lady Danbury Bridgerton role in the spin-off, may have just teased that Netflix and Shonda Rhimes aren’t finished with Queen Charlotte’s story just yet. Here’s everything we know so far about a possible Queen Charlotte season 2.

Queen Charlotte Season 2: Will It Happen?
At a talk in Rimini, Italy earlier this week, Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh was full of praise for the series’ creator Shonda Rhimes, Deadline reports. The series is ‘based on an internationally best-selling series [of novels by Julia Quinn], it’s being driven by the queen of long-form narrative Shonda Rhimes and is on this bonkers platform, Netflix, that goes everywhere,’ Andoh said, later praising Rhimes’ addition of the Queen to the series (she doesn’t appear in Quinn’s books), and making her Black despite the ruckus that might cause. Indeed, one audience member queried whether Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte were trying to ‘[rewrite] history’ with the universe’s diverse take on royal British life in the early 19th century, but Andoh was quick to bat the assertion away.
‘It didn’t rewrite history,’ Andoh replied. ‘It amplified a history that already existed. When you saw the history of that period – regency representations with no people of color in – that was rewriting history.’
The real Queen Charlotte’s race has long been subject of debate among historians: some suggest portraits of the Queen depict African features but, most notably, Charlotte was a direct descendant of Margarita de Castro y Sousa, a Black branch of the Portuguese royal family.
‘What Shonda Rhimes does rather brilliantly is she says, “What if?”,’ Andoh said in her talk. What if Queen Charlotte did indeed have African heritage? ‘You throw a stone into the pond, and see what ripples come from that.’
When Deadline first published its takeaways from the talk, journalist Jesse Whittock wrote, ‘Andoh is also set to appear in Season 2 of spin-off series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,’ and this is what has fans in a tizz. However, this statement has since been removed from Deadline’s article, instead explaining how Andoh was asked about the possibility of a series, but ‘didn’t offer insight when quizzed’.
So will there be Queen Charlotte season 2? We’re no closer to knowing. Whether Deadline is hiding an exclusive slip-up or it’s all a misunderstanding, here’s what might happen in a second instalment of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story if it does end up happening.

What Will Happen?
The first series of Queen Charlotte explores two timelines: the ‘present’ (1814 and 1815), which aligns with the Bridgerton action; and flashbacks to the titular character’s youth in 1761 and 1762. In the former, the Queen faces a grave problem: her only legitimate granddaughter, Princess Charlotte of Wales, has died in childbirth, creating a succession crisis and prompting her to rally her remaining 12 children to produce a new heir. In the latter, we see the genesis of the Queen’s marriage to King George, from her brother signing the marriage contract without her consent to the wedding day and their lives as the ruling monarchs.
In both, as well as the Queen, we learn much more about her friends Lady Danbury (Andoh) and Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell), including the death of Lady Danbury’s husband and her early days navigating society as a widow (Arsema Thomas plays young Agatha).
What we don’t see, however, is the origin of Violet Ledger’s love story (with the young version played by Connie Jenkins-Greig); she would of course later become Lady Bridgerton, the matriarch of the bustling family at the centre of Netflix’s Bridgerton. If Queen Charlotte season 2 does happen, we expect Lady Violet to take a larger role.

Who Will Star?
If Queen Charlotte season 2 goes ahead, we expect to see the following stars:
- Golda Rousheuvel as Queen Charlotte
- India Amarteifio as young Queen Charlotte
- James Fleet as King George III
- Corey Mylchreest as young King George
- Michelle Fairley as Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales
- Ruth Gemmell as Violet Bridgerton
- Connie Jenkins-Greig as young Violet
- Adjoa Andoh as Lady Agatha Danbury
- Arsema Thomas as young Agatha
That said, Queen Charlotte season 2 could flash further along the timeline, exploring a different tumultuous period of Charlotte and George’s lives. We think the Bridgerton cast would remain the same, but their younger counterparts could be aged up with new actors if this happens.

Release Date
No release date for Queen Charlotte season 2 just yet – we don’t even have confirmation from Netflix. The very earliest we could see the series would be 2027. And with Bridgerton season 4 slated for 2026, we’re not holding our breath…
All six episodes of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, as well as the first three seasons of Bridgerton, are available to stream on Netflix.
