This costume drama is perfect for fans of Downton Abbey

If you’re missing HBO’s The Gilded Age, good news: season three is on its way. (If you’ve never tuned in, imagine a cross between Apple TV’s The Buccaneers and Downton Abbey, and you’d have something close to The Gilded Age.) Created by Julian Fellowes, the series delves into the old money-new money conflicts in 1880s New York City. Here’s everything we know so far about season three.

Fancy a glimpse into the opulent world of New York high society? Gossip Girl is probably our modern-day answer, but it all started in the late nineteenth century when new money really started to flourish in New York City. Julian Fellowes’ The Gilded Age delves into this period of change, portraying the social and economic transformations against a luxurious backdrop with stunning attention to historical detail.

What Is The Gilded Age About?

The Gilded Age follows Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), a young woman who moves to New York City from Doylestown, Pennsylvania following the death of her bankrupted father. She moves in with her aunts, Agnes (Christine Baranski) and Ada (Cynthia Nixon), who embody old-money values, but have recently gained some new-money neighbours, the Russell family: husband and wife George (Morgan Spector) and Bertha (Carrie Coon), and their two young adult children Larry (Harry Richardson) and Gladys (Taissa Farmiga).

As Marian settles into her new life in New York City, tensions arise between the Russells and Marian’s aunts. Flouting societal expectations, Marian befriends an eclectic group of women and chooses an unconventional suitor, young lawyer Tom (Thomas Cocquerel). What proceeds is a deep dive into the period’s societal conventions told through these young women, alongside tracking the immense economic and societal changes.

What Will Happen In Season 3?

After the second season’s final moments, we’re anticipating some Russell family drama in The Gilded Age season three. With matriarch Bertha essentially promising her daughter Gladys’ hand in marriage to the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb), there’s bound to be some fallout.

Meanwhile, with Ada now in control of the Van Rhijn family finances, there’s sure to be some drama across the street, with Agnes surely struggling in more of a submissive role.
