Plus: everything we know about a possible season 4

Downton Abbey may be drawing to a close with one final film, but Julian Fellowes’ The Gilded Age is still going from strength to strength (Fellowes has even hinted there may one day be some Downton crossovers…). With the series returning for season 3 this week, here’s what you need to know before you tune in, plus everything we know about the future of the series.

The Gilded Age Season 3: Plot, Cast, Release Schedule & More

Fancy a glimpse into the opulent world of New York high society? Gossip Girl is probably our modern-day answer, but it all started in the late nineteenth century when new money really started to flourish in New York City. Julian Fellowes’ The Gilded Age delves into this period of change, portraying the social and economic transformations against a luxurious backdrop with stunning attention to historical detail.

Beginning in 1882 in season 1, and kicking off on Easter Sunday 1883 for season 2, season 3 is posed to enter 1884. This is slap bang in the middle of the real ‘Gilded Age’ period in American history, which lasted from the 1870s to the late 1890s.

What Is The Gilded Age About?

The Gilded Age follows Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), a young woman who moves to New York City from Doylestown, Pennsylvania following the death of her bankrupted father. She moves in with her aunts, Agnes (Christine Baranski) and Ada (Cynthia Nixon), who embody old-money values, but have recently gained some new-money neighbours, the Russell family: husband and wife George (Morgan Spector) and Bertha (Carrie Coon), and their two young adult children Larry (Harry Richardson) and Gladys (Taissa Farmiga).

As Marian settles into her new life in New York City, tensions arise between the Russells and Marian’s aunts. Flouting societal expectations, Marian befriends an eclectic group of women and chooses an unconventional suitor, young lawyer Tom (Thomas Cocquerel). What proceeds is a deep dive into the period’s societal conventions told through these young women, alongside tracking the immense economic and societal changes the era is known for.

What Will Happen In Season 3?

After the second season’s final moments, we’re anticipating plenty more Russell family drama in The Gilded Age season 3. Following the Opera War, the old guard is weakened, and the Russells are poised to take their place at the head of society. But with matriarch Bertha (Coon) essentially promising her daughter Gladys’ (Farmiga) hand in marriage to the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb), there’s bound to be some fallout. Patriarch George (Spector), meanwhile, risks everything on a gambit that could revolutionise the railroad industry – if it doesn’t ruin him first

Across the road, the Brook household is in chaos: Ada (Nixon) is the new lady of the house, and is now in control of the Van Rhijn family finances; Agnes (Baranski), naturally, cannot abide that fact. Peggy (Denée Benton), meanwhile, falls for a handsome doctor from Newport – but his family is certainly less than enthused by her career.

Will There Be The Gilded Age Season 4?

No news just yet on whether there will be a fourth season of The Gilded Age. In August 2024, Carrie Coon – who recently rose to increased prominence thanks to her role in The White Lotus season 3 – teased she was ‘optimistic’ about the possibility of season 4, provided viewing figures stay high.

‘If for some reason the numbers skyrocket this season, perhaps we’d get a multi-year deal,’ Coon added. ‘But that’s really above my pay grade.’

When asked about expanding the world, Coon joked: ‘I think we could do a whole Broadway musical, actually. Downton Abbey has the Christmas movie. I think we should have the Christmas musical on Broadway.’
